Constant muscle twitching for months, what it wrong with me??

Full disclaimer, I suffer hideously from health anxiety but this has been going on for some time now, so am after some thoughts on what to do next!

Since Christmas I have been having involuntary, almost constant muscle twitches in every part of my body. They usually only happen when I am resting and sometimes I go a few days when it settles down only to have it ramp back up again.
I initially went to the Dr in March, but I was only sent to the nurse who did a blood test and determined I had a big folic acid deficiency so started to take supplements. I do forget sometimes but overall they have made no difference at all. My Gp has been almost impossible to see recently.

My anxiety is pretty bad today and I am starting to wonder if it could be caused by something more sinister. I do have a lot of worry it could be a brain tumor or something like that as I do get headaches pretty often too.

I guess I am just looking for anyone who has had this too and gone on for this long and been ok? I can't see my GP about it until next Wednesday at the earliest Sad.

Your anxiety probably isn't helping, but you'll be aware of that I guess.

You should book a consult with the GP.....it's always better to get any prolonged changes checked out. Whilst waiting for an appointment make sure you are well hydrated and rested.....both of these will hopefully help.

Hope you feel better soon x

I had a bout of this for a while too.
Unfortunately no help, op, as it went away itself in the end, but I am interested to see what other posters suggest.

Sorry I don't have any advice op, but wanted to join thread as my dp has this and I've always wondered if its a sign of something! When resting for him too and his are at their worst when he's falling asleep - frequent twitches in all different parts of his body, sometimes as much as a twitch every few seconds. His has been going on for at least 5 years

My husband had this for months... I know he has bad health anxiety so I kept telling him it's just that. He wasn't so sure. He was focussed on every single twitch. Looked up all sorts of diseases. Convinced himself he had them.

His busy month at work passed and our daughter was born (both things I think he was subconsciously stressed about) and as if by magic, he never thought about the twitching again.

After seriously driving me mad about it! I had to reassure him day in and day out before this point.

As I've written this, my leg has twitched three times. 😂

What I'm trying to say is, I am convinced the more you focus on it, the more you feel it/notice it when some twitching is very normal

I have this when I am stressed
Avoid coffee
Do meditation
Exercise
Take multi vitamins (you might be low on potassium or magnesium etc)
See the GP too

I was very worried about ALS in the beginning, but now it's been six months getting no better or worse I think that's probably very unlikely. I have now managed to convince myself that a brain tumour is causing it. It's more annoying than anything but for me too it's worse just before I go to sleep.

I opened this when I read the title, to say it can be caused by Vit B12 or folate deficiency. It's great your folate was flagged as deficient, but do you know what your B12 result was? It's worth asking and if it was anywhere near the bottom of the range, ask for it to be retested now you've supplemented folate, as the two work hand in hand and folate deficiency can make B12 appear higher than it actually is. You also need to be clear of any B12 supplements for months before it's tested for it to be in any way accurate

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/06/2021 18:22

How old are you OP? I've heard it can be a symptom of menopause.

It can also be caused by certain medications, or by withdrawing from medication.

Caffeine can make it worse (it did when I had it) - have you tried cutting down?

If it helps put your mind at rest, I had this for years and thought I was stuck with it, but it did eventually go. It's crap though, my sympathy.

Tonic water can help with twitching/restless legs. Asda do flavoured versions if you don’t like tonic.

It maybe vitamin deficiency is behind your anxiety and twitching. I recently treated SIBO with antibiotics, curing 7 years of hellish symptoms so your gut health may be worth checking out. For this, naturopaths can be a better option than a gp.

Mum233 · 07/09/2021 16:42

Sorry know this is old but I’ve had this for months now too. I also suffer from health anxiety. I’m not deficient in anything. Did anyone get any answers? X

Starrr123 · 12/12/2021 09:24

@Mum233 hey how is your twitching now? I am getting it atm and have awful health anxiety! Its freaking me out xx

Nottosure22 · 13/11/2022 22:52

An old thread but in case anyone still wondered, twitching is an anxiety symptom like many other weird annoying symptoms that cone with anxiety. I also suffer with health anxiety and twitching, brain zaps, depersonalisation, headaches, tension, tremors, the list is endless tbh. Anxiety is horrible!

marmerdeeltje · 13/11/2022 23:00

You probably have a little magnesium deficiency?

Spookypig · 13/11/2022 23:42

OP, I have hideous health anxiety and I honestly believe that my health anxiety WAS the cause (well, at least partially!). So this is my theory behind what happened - I wasn’t taking good care of myself at the time and drinking enough water, eating a balanced diet etc. I get dehydrated very easily and the dehydration was the original cause of the twitch. Then I noticed it and started to Google and stress about it and the more I did this the worse my anxiety got, and my anxiety made it continue! I worked myself up into a right state like I do whenever I get literally any symptom and of course Googled and came up with the worst possible disease. Eventually, it went away by itself when I got distracted by convincing myself I had another disease so lost interest in this one a bit, as my health anxiety redirected itself 😩

I had similar with a persistent pain in a cartain part of my body - after an ‘all clear’ on an ultrasound, the pain disappeared as my anxiety did.

Anxiety does crazy things to our bodies and muscle twitching CAN be caused by anxiety so the more of a state you get yourself in, the worse it might become.
