Where in the UK would be good to live in retirement?

I'm daydreaming and looking on Rightmove.
It's time for a change.

I don't need school catchment areas.
I could potentially go anywhere as no family connections.

I'd like somewhere where I could walk to a shop, have access to arts and culture and not be overly busy or isolated.
I quite like country walks, I like the beach.
I might need a part time job as my pension is going to be rubbish.
I'd still need a reasonable size house as I'd want my children/grandchildren to stay.

I can't afford Winchester, which I like. Cardiff is also on the shortlist but still a bit expensive.

Where can you suggest?

The only downside to Harrogate might be that it’s quite hilly. Could be tricky to navigate with mobility issues…

And it is cliquey...

Spent over a decade there, when we put the house on the market overheard the neighbours saying , see them at No 10 are on the market, which one is that, you know the new people. Shock

Edinburgh ticks all your boxes for culture, coast and countryside but you might struggle on the house price bit. Although outside the city boundary your money would go further.

Northampton is an interesting town and not plagued by tourists. We nearly moved there.
Salisbury or some of the West Country towns like Frome.

Salisbury is where we settled, big enough to have internal bus routes.
Long and expensive rail journeys can be a snag though. Always check NatRail Enquiry for sample journey prices that you might like to make.
Even if you drive now you might not always.

Liverpool?

Definitely not Pembrokeshire due to the health care. My DF has lived there all his life and now he’s in his 70’s he’s not at all impressed with it (he has a heart problem).
