Fresh pasta left out of fridge overnight - eat or bin?

superoz · 24/06/2021 18:56

I had a grocery shop delivered yesterday. Dd put all the food away as I was working and today found the fresh pasta (just plain fusilli) in the cupboard instead of the fridge.

It looks ok....do I eat it or will I regret it?

@MenopausalMargot

Eat. Wouldn't even think twice about it.
not even once😉
NigellaSeed · 24/06/2021 20:09

OP did you eat it?? Report back or everyone's going to start feeling a bit culpable...

MenopausalMargot · 24/06/2021 20:10

@Badfootkk

No.spores .Bad very bad. Pasta and rice are very seriously bad for this. Basically a shield forms round them that Doesn't kill bad stuff when heated.
Spores and a shield? Righto...

Could you post some links to the scientific research that you are basing your opinion on please? I've been reheating pasta and rice that was left out of the fridge for the last 38 years and none of us have had a single adverse reaction.

I’ll find some because I was about to say the same. It’s pretty well known about rice, but applies to pasta too

@nimbuscloud

This morning I scraped mould off a yoghurt that was opened 10 days ago. Ate the yoghurt. Hate food waste.
^^This!!!

Not sure if it applies to the pasta OP bought as it’s not cooked, but I wouldn’t risk it with pasta or rice.

Get a hot compost bin and look after your health!

I am still on the fence and I haven’t made dinner yet!

I really hate throwing food away, on the other hand I’ve had food poisoning before and it’s not something I want to relive.

I’ve just checked the packet and the egg is pasteurised so hmmmm.......maybe.

And the pasta isn’t cooked right?

OP posts:
MenopausalMargot · 24/06/2021 20:30

Yes and I follow all those instructions in relation to rice. But the OP isn't posting about rice, she's posting about pasta.

I've read a few articles about people eating five or six day old rice/pasta salads and having horrible consequences, which unfortunately included death from food poisoning. Nobody would advise anyone to eat unrefrigerated five or six day old food where refrigeration is necessary. This post is only talking about where the pasta was left out overnight for one night, which I can't see as being a risk.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 24/06/2021 20:32

not rtft

anyone brought up raw chicken, salmonella, E-coli, random bbq/sushi story yet?

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/06/2021 20:38

I ate similar last night and now I'm dead.
Eat it

Greenmarmalade · 24/06/2021 20:40

@MenopausalMargot but it is an unknown risk for little benefit as I assume OP has other food.

Why risk it? I wouldn’t.

Greenmarmalade · 24/06/2021 20:41

The food wastage here is that you didn’t put it in the fridge (I’m not judging- I’ve done the same!). Doesn’t mean you should now eat it and risk being unwell. Would you even enjoy eating it?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/06/2021 21:11

Of course eat it. Fresh pasta is not the same as cooked rice. Cooked rice you need to be very careful with. As an emetophobe I don't take any chances but fresh pasta unrefrigerated for one night is no danger at all.

I doubt your kitchen would have been that warm overnight at the moment.

LadyJaye · 24/06/2021 21:15

@insancerre

I found my yougurts in the cupboard after dh put the shopping away the day before I’ve eaten two now and I’m still alive
This is my take - yoghurt is basically rotten milk anyway, how much worse can it get?

My OH is considerably more squeamish than me and does the fainting Victorian heroine routine if I eat anything that's more than a few days out of date.

Sucks to be him. I'm 42 and I'm not dead yet.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 24/06/2021 21:18

Is it filled with raw prawns or chicken?
No? I'd eat it no problem

dementedma · 24/06/2021 21:24

Of course eat it! DH is super fussy about food that's out of date. If only he knew how much out of date food he's eaten over the years with no ill effect.

superoz · 24/06/2021 23:32

I’m still alive!

Actually I chickened out and made a vegan burger instead.

The packet of pasta is still in my fridge while I contemplate what to do with it, or just wait and see whether anything grows on it tomorrow.

OP posts:
DappledThings · 25/06/2021 00:07

I can't imagine even considering not eating it.

Badfootkk · 25/06/2021 17:18

@MenopausalMargot. Please see my above post. I'm glad you went for something else. it is not worth being ill , for the sake of a couple quid.
