Vomiting after eating a boiled egg

I ate a boiled egg for lunch. With salad. Hadn't eaten since 8 last night (16:8). It was cooked properly, barely soft. They aren't old eggs, I bought them this morning.

A couple of minutes after, I started feeling sick and had to actually hang over a basin and was proper retching. Nothing came out though because I'd only eaten the egg so far and somehow that stayed down.

Something similar happened to me previously, I'd had omelette and salad a few days in a row, i think it was when there was that thread about whether an omelette constituted a proper dinner or not, and I kept fancying one. Anyway, this particular day, I was halfway through my omelette and came over proper heavey, full on saliva, the lot then too.

But I'm not allergic to eggs 🤷‍♀️ as far as I know.

Happened to me once. I'd been messing about making room in the fridge by moving 1 egg leftover into a new box. I'd given DD a nice fresh egg and thought I'll eat that less fresh one tomorrow. Only I forgot all about it and ate it a good few days later. I was quite ill. Thank god it was me and not DD. I've never swapped eggs about since.
Could yours have been off or slightly cracked on purchase or something.

There was a thread recently about this and a lot of people said they developed an intolerance to egg, myself included. I used to love scrambled egg and omelette but can't stomach them anymore, I put it down to eating too many when they were free on weight watchers or the richness of the butter I used but it's apparently a thing Confused

@SinkGirl

DT2 is properly allergic to eggs but only if they’re lightly cooked - immediate hives / swelling if he ate say scrambled egg, boiled egg etc. No problem at all if baked into something like cake, or even Yorkshire pudding if thoroughly cooked
That's a thing, apparently, I swear, from google.

It’s definitely a thing, a fairly sudden aversion to eggs in adulthood. There are a few posts on it here in the past.

For me, it happens, I need to avoid all egg-heavy foods for a couple of months and then I can gradually reintroduce them. But eggs as an ingredient in cake or something are fine.

If worried, of course talk to your doctor but for me, there was no cause, it seems to be a thing that happens some women in their mid-30s on and it’s been perfectly manageable for me like that.

Hope you feel ok now.

Thanks, I'm going to be seeing the dr for blood tests anyway so I'll ask for allergy tests too.

Could it be the salad? Bagged salad is a common source of food bugs

Airplanes · 24/06/2021 18:36

From what I read when it happened to me was it was to do with the sulphur in eggs. I could eat freshly laid ones from my friends chickens but not supermarket bought ones. I don't try anymore, the thought of them turns my stomach but I can eat food with a bit of egg in too. It came to a head for me after eating egg for breakfast every morning

I hadn't had any salad yet, I ate the egg first.

And I made it, it wasn't shop bought.

Yeah I've gone right off them.

I’m the opposite, eggs used to give me the runs and now I’m fine.

Amammai · 24/06/2021 18:56

Egg allergy is a complex one - my 3 year old has it (diagnosed via a skin prick test and under a consultant for it.) He can tolerate boiled eggs now- white and yolk bit initially boiled eggs made him throw up. Thankfully his tolerance developed after exposure to baked egg (in cakes etc) but if he even comes into contact with raw egg (like in raw cake mixture) he has a huge reaction. He can’t have certain ice-creams, sorbets, sauces, dippy eggs etc.

Look at the egg ladder - it might be you can tolerate it in some forms but not others.

Ha, I have cut out all cake, I'd better add it back in 😂

In all seriousness though, I think I'll avoid all egg except in cooked things for now.

Boiled eggs make me burp egg all day (sorry), but that's it.

romdowa · 24/06/2021 19:03

Have a look at the egg ladder , cooking changes the proteins. You could just have an issue with certain ways eggs are cooked. I developed an egg allergy myself in my 20s but mine started with facial swelling.

Candleabra · 24/06/2021 19:07

That's so weird. I can't eat scrambled eggs any more. The thought of them makes me heave now as I have literally been sick a couple of times straight after eating them. Really recent! No issues before whatsoever.

3Britnee · 24/06/2021 19:11

It is strange. Google reckons it's incredibly rare for an egg allergy to develop in adulthood, but according to this thread, it isn't.

If I start eating eggs again I'll look at that ladder but I think I'm going to leave them alone for a bit. Unless cooked in something.

I developed an egg allergy a few months ago- stomach cramps for days and awful upset stomach for hours shortly after eating eggs I spoke to my GP about it thinking he would want to test but he said there was no point. He said it was an easy fix, just stop eating them. I miss them though, I'm not brave enough yet to try eating anything with even a tiny bit of egg in, makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it! Thank god for vegan mayo and salad cream is all I can say!

3Britnee · 24/06/2021 19:19

I wonder if there's something wrong with what they are feeding chickens or something, for this to have happened to so many people recently Confused

I've been able to eat endless eggs until a couple of years ago. I started getting terrible stomach cramps and nausea after eating them, so now I'm very cautious. Gutted..as I love them. I googled egg intolerance and assumed I'd overdone my egg intake and developed this. Recently i ate lots of avocado and the same thing happened...googled that and turns out there's an avocado intolerance!! And same with quorn. But it's eggs I'm really sad about.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/06/2021 19:50

Quorn is a very well known thing, I can't touch it.
I've not heard of the avocado one though and so far don't have problems with it.

3Britnee · 24/06/2021 20:18

I love avocado! I'd better not develop problems with that!
