Gallstones?

Can anyone please advise/give their experiences... I have had intermittent pain in my right side at the bottom of my ribs for a year or even a bit longer now. It is a sharp pain that takes my breath away for a minute or so then disappears. Until today. From around 9am I have had this pain, it's not absolute agony and I have been able to work but if I breathe deeply it becomes worse. I'm certain it's gallstones, I was referred for a scan in January which apparently didn't find anything so I just don't know what to think. I'm in my 30's, about 1.5 stone over weight and female. I feel like all the signs are there! I will obviously phone GP and ask their advice again I'm just wondering if anyone else had experience of them starting like this? Or anything else it could be?

Kidneys scanned too?

Ohshittt · 24/06/2021 15:32

No they weren't Queef, thanks for your reply. Could that cause pain in this area?

Whenever I had a gallstone attack I was in absolute agony for hours. Rolling around on the floor and vomiting usually. I know not everyone experiences things the same way though, so that doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have gallstones. I’d have thought this would have shown up on your scan though. Hope you get some answers soon!

Thanks for the reply @Myneighboursnorlax but sorry you went through that agony! Did it all of a sudden come on then? No little signs leading up to it? Just wondering if that's what that is and wondering if they perhaps missed something tiny on the scan 🤔

it easily could be.

I had 3 episodes of what I believe to be gallstones moving about when I was pg with my youngest (well, the 3rd was while in labour..ffs!), then another when he was 3 weeks old.

then I had biliary colic when he was 6 weeks old (they called me Yellow Mellow, 3 nights in hospital)
the pain each time was excruciating.

after the biliary colic business I was told I needed a cholecystectomy, and they put a rush on it so had op when DS6 was 3m old.

I have 2 questions:
1, do you ever have pain in right shoulder primarily, or both shoulders or upper back as well as under rib?

2, do you have pain/more pain after eating fatty food?

if yes to both I'd be very surprised if it wasn't gallstones related!

get GP to refer you for a gallbladder scan or whatever needs doing, asap

My experience is similar to MyNeighbours post. I actually only found anout them as I was having an ultrasound for an Ovarian cyst, then they just checked everywhere else. I was late 20's at the time.
My first experience of pain from then was like a switch being flicked. None at all. Two mouthfuls of a Cornetto, instant severe pain so bad that I thought something internal had torn or ruptured, plus desperately trying to make myself sick.
I then had a couple of months of vomiting and / or everytime I had anything with fat in, ranging from a bacon sandwich to a hot chocolate. I had my gall bladder taken out via keyhole, never had an issue since.

TheQueef · 24/06/2021 16:32

It needs a scan on both to rule them out.
I think GP can ask for both looked at in the same scan so it's worth asking. Brew

You need to give wither your GP or 111 a call as an episode of pain lasting this long could mean a stone is stuck, it could also be a number of other non-gallstone related issues but either way it needs to be checked out.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply to me! Never get pain in my shoulder/s, pain isn't always after eating fatty food but sometimes has been for example this morning I hadn't even eaten yet. I'm sure the GP will advise further, sorry you had that awful pain @Seiheiki but I'm pleased it's sorted for you now.
