School says you now need test for hayfever symptoms

Ds suffers really badly with hayfever so he's off school today. I can still take him out and about though can't I? As in we don't ahve to isolate unless he has any of the main symptoms. I know it's hayfever as antihistamines help with the symptoms. I'm going to ahve to test him every other day if the school keep up this ridiculous rule.

That's is absolutely ridiculous mine would be off for weeks.

anon12345678901 · 24/06/2021 08:22

That's crazy, mine is suffering particularly bad at the moment with hayfever, me too. Watery eyes, runny nose, tickley throat, Antihistamine helps but not for the whole day. I wouldn't want to test him every other day as I know it's hayfever.

Whinge · 24/06/2021 08:23

What symptoms are they asking you to stay off school and test for?

It sounds completely bonkers.

That’s ridiculous. Fair enough if it’s the first time or you have other symptoms.

If an antihistamine doesn’t last all day it is worth speaking to a gp as they can often be taken in higher doses or they can prescribe stronger ones.

roguetomato · 24/06/2021 08:27

Some of the antihistamine can be taken once a day instead of twice a day. Speak to gp or pharmacist.

POASthreadstarter · 24/06/2021 08:28

Runny nose and sneezung. They specifically said 'hayfever symptoms'. Ds has sen and is very behind at school anyway. I'm not happy! I understand the new variant has 'hayfever-like symptoms' but it's not official advice to isolate for these symptoms. I think I definitely need to go to the gp for stronger antihistamines.

Thanks everyone, glad to see I'm. Not the only one who thinks this is crazy.

My ds had really bad hay fever every year. He was prescribed with steroid nose spray one year and it totally stopped him having runny nose.
Also he was on anti allergy meds for ages. He hardly have any hay fever symptoms now.

Soubriquet · 24/06/2021 08:30

Bloody hell

No point in sending the kids in school at all at this rate

Dd has asthma but hasn’t had an attack in a long time thankfully. When it manifests though, she coughs.

Whinge · 24/06/2021 08:30

I'd be sending him back to school, that is ridiculous. They can't make him stay home and test for a runny nose and sneezing. Confused

0None0 · 24/06/2021 08:33

The guidance is to self isolate for these symptoms. You can’t let students with these symptoms in to school saying ‘it’s only hay fever’. It might be or it might not be. It only takes one positive student spreading it around to close the school for everyone. No thanks

Bellasblankexpression · 24/06/2021 08:36

I’ve had hayfever for what feels like months, as has DH and little DS has been sneezing with sore eyes too! Hayfever is so common, how on earth is this a good idea?!
You can’t even get a test for those symptoms unless you lie (PCR)

POASthreadstarter · 24/06/2021 08:37

Can you show me where it says he needs to isolate for a runny nose and sneezing please?

OP posts:
AChickenCalledDaal · 24/06/2021 08:37

Isn't he testing twice a week anyway? If it's the normal pattern of symptoms for him, I'd just keep that up.

trying29 · 24/06/2021 08:38

My son had what I thought was very bad hayfever and turned out to be covid -delta variant. And yes I was called to say it was that variant. Presents differently in kids

Muststopeating · 24/06/2021 08:42

@0None0 No! It isn't!

As per the gov website there are 3 symptoms that require PCR test (and thus self isolation):

a high temperature
a new, continuous cough
you’ve lost your sense of smell or taste or it’s changed

www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

Sneezing and a runny nose is not mentioned anywhere!

Send him into school OP and send the school the link. Total rubbish, technically he's not even allowed to do a PCR test at the moment.

I've been very over cautious and tested if there was the slightest doubt to be safe. But this morning, I am sending my 3 year old to nursery with a cold without a test. She doesn't have a cough or a temp so she is going for her last day before school holidays.

Scarby9 · 24/06/2021 08:42

Schools have to be super-cautious. The Delta variant seems to show more as cold symptoms rather than the Covid classic three, and they are asking for him to have a test, not isolate for ten days. Test - back to school if negative.
You can get Covid as well as having hayfever. Schools just can't take the chance as cases rise again.

Whinge · 24/06/2021 08:43

they are asking for him to have a test, not isolate for ten days. Test - back to school if negative.

But he doesn't have symptoms that would make him eligible for a PCR test. Confused

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 24/06/2021 08:48

School sent my 6 year old home on Monday (he’s had a cold and a lingering cough).
I’m just waiting for the result of his PCR test before he can go back in, his teacher said they have to be especially cautious now, even with hay fever 😐

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 24/06/2021 08:53

Ds2 was off school twice last week as his hayfever gives him a cough so I had to test him. Hes still got a cough but after 2 negative pop tests I'm confident its hayfever now.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 24/06/2021 08:53

Pcr test not pop test

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/06/2021 09:01

My hay fever has been the worst it's been in years over these past few weeks, nothing is working for it and I'm struggling with work because of it. I haven't been for a PCR test because I know what hay fever is having suffered with it for my entire adult life. Madness to suggest he needs a test.

GoddamReylos · 24/06/2021 09:09

I also have a child at home today because of hayfever. We both cough a lot with it so I was able to get a PCR test on that basis. I was very clear with the school that it’s hayfever and he won’t take antihistamine regularly enough the relieve his symptoms. I was told no negative test, no school. So here we are, at home missing school, awaiting results Brew

FlyingBurritoBrothers · 24/06/2021 09:15

My little DS suffers with hayfever very badly and has since he was about 3.
We are still sending him into school every day, as everyone in school is aware of his hayfever, its recorded on the school system because we often have send meds into school for it. You can tell by looking at him again, because his eyes are so swollen at the moment.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/06/2021 09:46

Dd was sent home tues with a cold and told to take a pcr test. They weren't happy with 3 negative lateral flow tests. Negative result in this morning so she's going back, still full of cold. We'll see what happens!
