If you have a Coeliac child

How do you handle eating out? We are having to stay away from home next weekend and I'm panicking about my DD. She is 5 and we have known she is coeliac since she was tiny. I worried much less before covid as we never had a problem, but it has been so long since we last ate in a restaurant and it is now giving me huge anxiety as she got glutened at school recently and was very, very ill. I can't stand the thought of it happening to her away from home.

I know rules about what you can take into Europe post Brexit have changed. Even things like homemade sandwiches aren't allowed if they contain meat or dairy. I'm not sure how the rules apply to packaged food. We often drive to Denmark (8 hours after an overnight ferry) so it makes life more complicated if we're restricted in what food we can take for the journey.

Urgh, I hadn't started thinking about the plane yet. I'll have to get in touch nearer the time. Thanks for the baggage and seating tip, wish I'd known that when we went to France. I paid about £30 for extra baggage for all the food.

I keep forgetting about that.

Vomiting is Gluten poisoning to a coeliac, not food poisoning.

Chains, chains and chains are your friend, they have to be so strict.

Dd never vomits if glutenedso unusual for her But yes I guess some people do : (

Yes, I love the gluten free cuppa tea site! I didn't know there was a Facebook group though, I'll have to join that one too. The Coeliacs eat out too one is great, one search for Skegness and I have plenty of suggestions. Now I just need to reassure DD that the food we are served is safe as she has huge trust issues. I don't want her to go hungry all weekend.

When we went to France we took GF bread and tins of tuna. It got a bit boring though. I'd love to hear packed lunch ideas when there is no fridge.

Her FB group is a really lovely group, definitely join. I'm also a member of Coeliacs Eat Out, and have just joined a couple of Scottish groups in readiness for planning our summer trip.

I really want to go to Skegness for the gluten free doughnut shop! You can actually order a kit through the post which includes the mix and a doughnut dropper, I bought one for my husband for Christmas.

I think a doughnut dropper is something I need in my life! I showed DD the pictures of the GF ones and she is very excited Grin

They had a picnic at school today and she refused to eat anything. I really hope I can help her trust food again.
