Credit check and job offer

Can anyone help? I have a credit card debt. I ran it up when very depressed and in the midst of a crisis.

Fast forward 3 years and I am in a much better place and applying for new jobs. Got the offer of my dream job today but learned that they will run a credit check on me.

I am so ashamed. They will see my poor credit history and withdraw the offer. Is there anything I can do?

Having large credit doesn’t mean bad credit score. I’m in finance, I have 20k on credit cards but 999 score. I just had a credit check run, no issues.

What on your credit file is the concern?

FayKnights · 23/06/2021 19:56

Is the debt delinquent, as in you missed loads of consecutive payment and defaulted or is it just credit card debt you are paying off?

What kind of job, and what credit check?

If it’s a soft search it will only throw up CCJs or bankruptcy, so you may be worrying for nothing.

Do you have ccjs or bankruptcy? If not, they're unlikely to see it on a standard employment credit check

Mountaingoatling · 23/06/2021 20:02

Agreed with other posters. They will be checking for bankruptcy, CCJs or serial missed payments (meaning a large number of unmade payments in a short time). The level of your current debt may be a concern if you will be working in a field where bribery is a risk (eg planning department in a local council). The level of past debt, if being paid off, is very unlikely to cause concern. It will be managed by a junior HR person and your future boss and team won't know or think twice about it.

My job do credit checks. It is to confirm I'm on the electoral role and I don't have any CCJs. I also have to declare any non-mortgage debts of over 10k. It's basically to check I'm not at risk of blackmail or selling government secrets.

If you are worried, discuss it with your employer first.

Sign up to credit Karma or experian (don't pay for it!) and check what it really says?

I had thousands on a couple of credit card and still had an excellent rating.

what kind of debt and what kind of job?

as pp most jobs just do a check for defaults, ccj.
if the job has security clearance than it might go further in depth.
