Selling a domain name

10 years ago I purchased a domain name with an idea for a business and never followed up on it, forgot to get rid of it and was slightly miffed today to see a renewal bill from 123reg come through for it. So I went on to cancel, and then I thought, hold on, I wonder if this is something I can actually sell. Chat agent confirmed that it is my domain name to sell. (I didn't really know how this worked, if I was just sort of leasing the name from them or something)

So I think it might actually be worth something...it's got a co.uk suffix and is a short 3 word phrase that everyone knows, and that has connotations of winning at card games.

So has anyone sold a domain name before and can give advice on the best/easiest way to go about it?

Unless it is something very specific to a brand you'll save more money by just not renewing.

I haven’t sold one, but I’ve bought one. The website address just had a link saying “domain for sale, contact xxx”.

Xxx however turned out to be a CF and told me he wanted 8k for it. I said hard pass. He rang back and offered £5k. I told him no, we just didn’t need it that badly as we already had the .com and didn’t need the .co.uk. It was also fairly niche and no other company would have a similar name.

In the end, he continued to ring me and bargain against himself by dropping £1k at a time and we eventually got it for £500 when we pointed out nobody else was likely to buy it Grin

I thought gambling site names might be quite lucrative? That's definitely what it connotes.

As PP said, if it was a domain that would already warrent significant value you woud have been contacted, making money out of domain names was only really a thing in the early 2000's and even then a law came to pass to stop domain squatting.

Best just not renew ,sorry

It was set up through an email account I never use, that's why I forgot about it so long, so wouldn't have seen if there had been any contacts about it anyway. It was just when the paypal bill went through that I thought I'd better stop it.

There are so many domain name suffixes now that there is no real requirement for specific .co.uk.or.com, it’s only really brands that buy up all the connotations of their name to control, having said that it might be worth a phone call to a large gambling organisation and I would look for someone in their marketing department, and give them a call see if they are interested if it’s something you think they might want, no idea what it would be worth though, have you spoken to 123reg they might be able to advise

That's an idea @user1471528245, I might speak to 123reg.

I don't want to say what it actually is but it's on a par with, say winatcards.co.uk

Or maybe sedo? I can see the same name as mine but with a .de suffix is priced at 2990 euros
