Waking up with a blocked nose and headache every morning help!

I don’t know if it’s because we have to keep the windows shut as we live on a road or because we live in an exceptionally dusty house but it’s driving me insane.

I was up at 5.30 this morning because I woke up with a blocked stuffy nose and couldn’t get back to sleep.

Has anyone else had this?

Hayfever? Allergies to something? Have you tried taking an antihistamine at night?
I wake up like that if I've forgotten my antihistamine, I have hayfever.

BlibBlabBlob · 23/06/2021 07:17

Do you really have to keep the windows shut at night? I'd wake up with a headache if I did that - our bedroom window is open all year round.

If the noise is a problem, ear plugs are an absolute lifesaver. I've slept 100% better since I started using them. Whereas before every little noise would wake me during the night.

Bellasblankexpression · 23/06/2021 07:25

@DaxtheDestroyer no I haven’t, I do have hayfever but thought because it’s night time and the windows are closed it couldn’t be that

@BlibBlabBlob yes unfortunately as we have a fun late night motorbike circuit 😐 god knows why they choose a residential road, and it remains busy overnight. I can’t wear earplugs as otherwise I don’t hear DS on the monitor sadly

I have this and it's because I grind my teeth.

PurplePlain · 23/06/2021 07:30

Do you have a dust mite allergy? It's quite common and the symptoms are similar to hay fever.

Marcanana · 23/06/2021 07:35

I'm a year-round open window fan too. I can't bear sleeping in a hotel room when the window doesn't open. I put up with the noise for the fresh air.
Could you be allergic to your bedding? Dust mites, or feathers?

Bellasblankexpression · 23/06/2021 08:24

It could be dust, my house is the dustiest I
Have ever come across I don’t know why! No matter how many times I clean it, dust everywhere!
I do grind my teeth as well… I didn’t realise that could do it

I developed this out of nowhere. Eventually, and it took me ages to even consider it, I realized I had become allergic to feather pillows. A sad day but switching immediately resolved the issue.

Ohmygoshandfolly · 23/06/2021 10:32

I have this whenever I leave the heating on overnight by accident. During summer I’d guess you just need some ventilation.

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 10:33

Use a netipot at night before bed and clear out your sinuses. Drink plenty of water. Have an air purifier in your room and dust regularly.

UhtredRagnarson · 23/06/2021 10:34

And I would definitely try and have the window open. But I know the sound of the motorbikes would be awful.

AdultHumanWhale · 23/06/2021 10:59

Do you hang your bed sheets outside to dry?

I have hayfever and had to stop doing that because pollen gets on the pillowcases and then my face goes on the pillowcases... it doesnt end well.

idontlikealdi · 23/06/2021 16:54

Hay fever.

dradharry · 10/09/2021 01:44

If your symptoms are throughout the whole year, it's likely house dust mite allergy (Google search the exhaustive solutions for this, but key is regular - weekly - washing of bedding at 60 degrees Celsius, using anti-noise dust mite bedding covers (pillow, mattress, and duvet)). If they're only during the pollen season it's likely hay fever.
To confirm/discount, have a RAST blood test and then have skin prick testing if RAST positive.

PomegranateSeed · 10/09/2021 06:21

I have hay fever and the season is long due to different types of pollen. I have to take an antihistamine at night especially when sleeping with windows open and symptoms are as you described.

purplesequins · 10/09/2021 06:25

what kind of bedding do you have?
and when have you last washed the duvet and pillow?
how often do you hoover the bedroom?

I have a dust mite allergy and cannot sleep in feather/down or wool for that reason. if I do I wake up with a puffy face and snot nose.
I wash pillow and duvet once or twice a year.

outnumbered77 · 10/09/2021 06:47

Could you try an air purifier?

MrsRockAndRoll · 11/09/2021 07:24

I also think allergies. I have a dust allergy so need to registry move furniture to dust under it or I feel like you do. I would wash your duvet and if possible buy bed pillows. Purchase zipper pillow protectors meaning that they can be regularly washed
