Nice Smelling House Ideas please

I love my house to have it's own smell, a nice one though. It currently smells of the neighbours nightly weed and cigarette smell...

What is the best way to achieve nice smelling houses?

I think the previous occupants may have smoked in the house as well - and it does smell as though I keep forgetting to sort out damp washing (I do, it's feral, it's my goal for 2021 Part B to never leave damp washing out again).

Windows open daily to air the house.
Scented wax melts burning whenever I'm at home.
Wash bedding, towels and any pet beds or blankets regularly - mine all get washed weekly to avoid a smell build-up.
I vacuum daily and never leave dirty washing in the basket. If it's dirty but there's not enough for a full load, I leave it in the machine so the smell doesn't waft everywhere Grin

Dishes washed daily and the bin has a lid on and is stored in a cupboard to try and contain any smell. Any really smelly food or packaging goes straight in the outside bin too.

Always keep a window open.
Clean and esspecially hoover regularly.
Use nicely scented cleaning products.
We burn incense, but not the cheap sandalwood stuff, good quality incense smells wonderful. You can also use good quality scented candles, TK Maxx has a good selection usually.

This is a weird one but the cleaning expert on “how to save a grand” (c4) suggested putting some mild fabric conditioner on a damp cloth to clean hard surfaces (not ones you eat off, though) to make your house smell good and I’ve tried it, it actually works great!
I also do open windows every day whatever the weather, vacuum and do the dirty laundry regularly, and burn good quality scented candles.

Redlorryellow · 21/06/2021 15:12

Oh and I second the nice scented cleaning products: Method is the best, I currently have 3 on the go (grapefruit, peach, passion fruit)

An electric diffuser that sprays out a mist of water and essential oils. Mine is a ceramic one from Oliver Bonas and I love it.

ScottishNewbie · 21/06/2021 15:13

St Eval diffusers. So much nicer that most others. I recommend the herbal ones

Aside from airing the house adequately, I find it's more of a question of dealing with the cause of the smell rather than then working to remove it.

So as PP's have mentioned, dirty washing, bins, smelly shoes, pets etc need to not be causing a smell in the first place. For example we have a very small kitchen bin so that it has to be emptied frequently. We have a strict schedule for emptying ChampagneCat's litter tray, though it rarely smells when the time comes round. DDog's are bathed and groomed regularly and their beds are washed and hoovered and so on.

It's a proper mission of mine as our home descends into hovel status quite quickly without a routine Blush

Oh, there are some wonderful ideas on here.

Yes, the house is quite a mess at the moment (due to sickness), so this is probably not helping.

A routine sounds likes a good plan - does anyone have one they would mind sharing please?

Bins are OK - they go out daily (due to a small kitchen)

Bake things.

Earfling · 21/06/2021 20:48

@NewUser123456789 I said nice smells, not burnt things (I cannot bake)

Depending on the type of hoover you have, you can soak the filters in something like zoflora or fabulous,I have a shark so the whole house smells amazing when I hoover.

I use clean linen fragrance as I hate the floral stuff.

Febreeze curtains, clean bathrooms and use mild scented rim blocks etc

Find a scent you like and stuck to just that or it will end up having the opposite effect though!

Champagneforeveryone · 21/06/2021 20:58

earfling my stellar moment was the creation of my monthly list. It has a different job for every day of the month, so for example the 1st is always new water filter and descale shower head / kettle (we have very hard water) There's also tasks like washing the Hoover filters which definitely help with the pong.

I always open windows while I take DS to college. Admittedly there's only certain places I would recommend this while you are out the house!

Robot Hoover on a timer to pick up the worst of the muck. I've honestly found that the better routine you have, the easier it is to add to it IYSWIM.

thelegohooverer · 21/06/2021 21:15

I have a daily routine of essential jobs - open windows, dishes & counters, cat litter & bins, bathrooms and quick tidy. I’ve never got the hang of weekly routines and the rest of my housekeeping is a bit haphazard but those little jobs keep most of the smells at bay. I’m not a fan of artificial smells, I just like it fresh and clean.

I wouldn’t be without my tumble-drier and a good extractor fan for the hob.

I might have to sell the house or shoot the neighbour if it smelled of smoke though.

whattodo2019 · 21/06/2021 22:16

Open bedroom windows and pull back the bedding everyday.
Air the bathrooms and clean the loos daily
I use White company or Neom organics diffusers around the house
I wash my dogs and their bedding weekly and I replace the dogs bedding about every 6-9 months.

Despite having two dogs my house smells divine!!!

Suzi888 · 21/06/2021 22:19

Open windows, wax melts, zoflora, vacuum every day, wash fabrics regularly.

Woeismethischristmas · 21/06/2021 22:22

A clean house smells nice I like method cleaner, I loved the lavender multipurpose spray but I think it was a limited edition so use the orange.

Laiste · 21/06/2021 23:02

Wash bedding weekly and use a fabric softener.

If you have shower curtains take them down and wash them once a week too. Plus bath mats.

Use a drain cleaner on any slow running plug holes. They can make a house smell stale.

I wash living room throws once a week and keep the wood floor hoovered and moped.

Yes to cat litter trays kept spotless.

Loos - obvious, but also spray a bit of bleach where loo meets floor. It's a dirt trap down there.

Keep towels washed regularly. Flannels, kitchen cloths and those sponges - bung them in with the hot wash often too.
