How much do you spent yearly on sports clubs for your DC?

DS is 14, he's never enjoyed sport and despite trying a few things when he was younger nothing ever clicked.

He's now discovered mountain biking, he's obsessed and is getting really good but needs a better bike which will cost over £1k.

I'm just interested to see what we've saved over the years while all his friends have been doing weekly football clubs (to justify the cost really!).

Music lessons and music related courses, exams and instrument requirements is around 3k.

puffylovett · 21/06/2021 08:02

I used to spend about £75 a month in climbing for the youngest and £30 on roller hockey for the eldest. Both boys also mountain bike and bmx but to save money their dad builds their bikes for them! It’s a pricey hobby, once you add up the cost of decent helmets, pads, body armour, trousers, rucksacks and then the cost of going to trail centres and having cake and coffee Grin

Standrewsschool · 21/06/2021 08:04

Probably averaged between £50-100 per month, depending on whether dc x2 were doing one or two sports per month. Plus additional one off kit cost such as football boots, etc.

GiantToadstool · 21/06/2021 08:04

It didnt used to be much here (well relatively. Swimming lessons x 2 and 1 other club each 1 x week) but currently child 2 has gone further in her sport and it's costing us £100 a month just for classes for that sport alone...

We aren't high income 🙈

Standrewsschool · 21/06/2021 08:05

Not To mention petrol to and from events, plus cups of coffee etc

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/06/2021 08:06

Around a hundred a year per child on Beavers/Cubs/Scouts. Maybe £150 including camps.
Cricket course has cost £40 per child
Skiing was £12 per lesson (dry slope), race club would have been £100 per year (but, Covid and we've now moved further away)

Looking at a watersports club currently.

Swimming... £25 per month.

GiantToadstool · 21/06/2021 08:07

If you have the money... a bike is a tangible "thing" too so you can see where your money is going. It's keeping him fit. Get a good lock though (I have no knowledge of these things would just be afraid of it getting stolen.)

Laceandflowers383 · 21/06/2021 08:07

Yeh getting him properly kitted out is expensive but so important for their safety. It is an expensive hobby but I'm so pleased he's found something he loves.

Laceandflowers383 · 21/06/2021 08:08

Yes to a really good lock and it'll also be put on the home insurance but he's not going to be leaving it outside shops or anything like that, its for trails so it won't be left.

Swimming only, about £30/month, plus some extra coaching in holidays.

PracticingPerson · 21/06/2021 08:11

I amnow considering music lessons, but it would be their choice not mine whether to start/continue.

idontlikealdi · 21/06/2021 08:13

I'd hate to add it up - horses!

Comedycook · 21/06/2021 08:18

£30 a month for football plus £50 a year for the kit.

Numerous pairs of football boots but I usually grab an ebay bargain

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/06/2021 08:56

DS does

Swimming £7.50 a week, term time only
Cubs £10 a month
Horse riding one group lesson and one private lesson weekly. £58 a week. Envy Plus extra for gymkhanas and they run a club in the school holidays which he sometimes goes to while I work.

Angelmonkey · 21/06/2021 09:09

£600 a year for dancing, which will increase as she gets older, plus shoes, dresses, shoes and competitions. Closer to £1000 a year for tennis lessons for my older child

spiderlight · 21/06/2021 09:13

Fencing: £65 a month for training and I dread to think how much on kit.

WhoDidAndWhy · 21/06/2021 09:21

Honestly? Tens of thousands every year. More than our mortgage payments by far. Both my DCs do extremely expensive sports with lots of one on one coaching and travel involved. We make extremely significant sacrifices to continue to pay for it all.

If you have the money, buy the bike as its great to have kids engaged and passionate about a sport or hobby. If you don’t, then you can’t and you shouldn’t feel bad about it either.

GiantToadstool · 21/06/2021 09:50

Tens of thousands!??! What do they do? Obviously something only for the very elite!

Polkadots2021 · 21/06/2021 10:32

We live somewhere very outdoorsy so apart from the actual family kit for stuff, we don't pay anything for lessons etc. Though I'd be happy to change that if the kiddos really fell in love with a certain sport and wanted lessons. I'm a massive fan of you investing in the mountain bike.

purplesequins · 21/06/2021 10:36

about 300 per year membership fees per child and about the same in shoes and equipment.

look at second hand, some very good bikes are sold almost new. check that it's not dodgy.

Kjr33 · 21/06/2021 10:51

Probably easily 1k per year before you start to even think about the petrol/nights in hotels/ replacement of kit etc etc etc also he has been away on camps etc so the real figure could be more like 3k or more per year…..scary when you start to think about it! If your son has found a passion and you can afford it I say go for it but something like mountain bikes I would expect him to pretty quickly learn how to repair his own bike to save costs, plenty on YouTube etc to learn from.

DipSwimSwoosh · 21/06/2021 12:16

Per child at the mo just £20 swimming and £20 theatre per month. Around £500 per year.

ChocolateRiver · 21/06/2021 12:20

We have 2 children (ds 8 and dd5) and probably spend at least 2.5K a year on the activities themselves. Then there are extras such as clothes, shoes, equipment etc plus ferrying them about. I dread to think of the real cost. It would be thousands. But they love it and it keeps them active. Plus we’ve got a good groups of friends who we meet up with regularly from it too. Ds does swimming, rugby, football and cricket. Dd does swimming and quite a lot of dance (about 6 hours a week). I know some people will think this sounds a lot, but it works for my family.

Leftphalange · 21/06/2021 12:27

We are about 90 a month for a competitive sport.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/06/2021 16:02

Eek...
Swimming 2x £20 per month
Scouting 2x £35 per term (x3) (then camps & trips)
Martial arts 2x £20 per month

Football x1 that was £180 per school year, he's now joined a club, not sure on subs for that yet...

Music x1 £7 per week 15 mins 1:1 at school.

At least parkrun is free! Plus they do school activities free.

It's worth it. They need to burn a lot of energy and DS1 has additional needs so focused activities are good for his social and physical development.
