What are your 9 year olds reading?

Want to find a couple of summer reading books for DD and DS.
Current favourites are:
Harry Potter
Simon Thorn
Wizards of Once
Train to Impossible Places

DD can cope with reading them by herself. DS needs something a bit easier to read alone, but that will still interest an 11 year old.

Does no-one read Enid Blyton nowadays

I got my 10 year old the box set of Malory Towers books for Christmas after we watched the BBC adaptation together last year, she's enjoying them so far.

@eddiemairswife

Does no-one read Enid Blyton nowadays?
I kept all of mine, because I loved them, for my dc. Malory towers series and naughtiest girl series went down well when they were about 8 or 9. But, goodness, famous five and secret seven (which I had loved) are very very dull and slow compared to today's offerings.

It's like when you get your kids to watch chitty chitty bang bang because you remembered loving it, and then when you're all watching it together, you're thinking errrm.

Wow! Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Unfortunately we don't have a library or a bookshop with English books anywhere nearby so I have to go by recommendations and pot luck!

I have read the whole famous five series to DS, he loved them.
Warrior Cats sounds like something DD would like!
DS is very tricky to find books for, he won't read fiction for himself, although seems to enjoy being read to. I tried the worst witch a few years ago, Dd wasn't interested but probably would like them now.

DD9 doesn't like reading. We keep trying as I was a book worm. She does read fact books more like robots and space but that's still sporadic. Feeling a bit bad!

arethereanyleftatall · 21/06/2021 20:03

Back to the question, my dd (slightly older at 10, can't remember 9) is loving Francis hosgsen Burnett series - secret garden, little princess, little lord fontleroy

She was roaring with laughter recently at Roxy and Jones and the Great Fairytale Cover Up.

Rainbow Grey is a new one she’s really enjoyed.

Witch Wars for more funny crazy vibes

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/06/2021 21:10

Mallory Towers made an appearance the other day in DD1's hands
Other than that - she seems to be reading, and lending half the class David Baddiel's books at the moment
Dork Diaries, Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Dogman and assorted Jacqueline Wilson ones... plus anything exploring the inner reasoning behind stuff like why is snot green etc - she has an old Operation Ouch book that she's read to death and Kay's Anatomy I think it is. Horrible Histories/Science/Geography etc still get outings periodically (although the dog ate half of Horrible Geography). Basically she vanishes to the loo and comes back an hour and several chapters later.

And some fucking Fortnite hints and tips book she got Nanna to buy in the charity shop.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 21/06/2021 21:12

Nothing. He's really not into reading.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/06/2021 21:16

Mallory Towers
And I think some Enid Blyton too. (DD)

DS5 would read Astrosaurs and Beast Quests at that age

MinnieJackson · 21/06/2021 21:17

My 8 year old likes reading the novels of the pixar films, and he's currently reading Ant Man. He has asd So I think it helps him visualise if he's seen the films first...although we went through the whole series diary of a minecraft zombie, he even wrote a book review of it for his teacher. His favourite part was 'when it was picture day at Zombies high school and he realised how ugly he was' 😁.His teacher said she was dreading school photo day now

Pilo · 21/06/2021 21:59

My DS dislikes fantasy stuff but likes ‘real life’ stories, usually urban type kids having an adventure or similar, with characters he can relate to, The break hits recently have been The boy at the back of the class by Onjali Rauf, Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson, The Boy who made everyone laugh (Helen Rutter), The Boy who fooled the World (Lisa Thompson) … you get the theme here Grin. Oh, and definitely David Baddiel.

Pilo · 21/06/2021 22:00

*big hits, not break
