Difference between size 1 and 2 nappies?

Wasn't sure where best to post this but pregnant with baby number 1 so trying to get my head round everything. I've been given a few packs of nappies from Aldi/lidl in size 1 and 2 and I'm confused about the difference (the size guides for both seem to be the same) as there is barely any difference in the weight? Size 1 is 4-11 lb and size 2 is 6-13 so only a few lb difference. If baby is above 6lb do I just go onto the size 2 straight away? I've only got a few packs so wondering which ones I should stock up on.

It varies. Take a few of each. But size 1 don't tend to last long ime

Start with size 1 if they fit, then go onto size two in a few weeks’ time. I seem to remember size 1 leaked at night after a week or two, so that’s when we moved DS up a size rather than base on weight. Same again for size 2 to size 3, as he was sleeping through by that point but would wake up with damp clothes/sleeping bag.

If you are within easy reach of your preferred brand in a supermarket then I wouldn’t recommend ‘stocking up’ - they can go up a size quite quickly.

Babies sometimes lose some weight after birth, so you might need a smaller size than they're born at. Just try both and see which seems to fit better. They won't be in size 1 for long.

I wouldn't stress too much about the sizes. You'll know when to move up. Don't stock up on too many of the same brand either. My lovely Mum bought a pack of nappies every week in her weekly shop and gave them to us when dd1 was born. She bought them all from Sainsburys I think. It turned out they just didn't fit dd very well and leaked. God knows why. Every other supermarket nappy was fine. We saved them for dd2 and used them 3 years later 😂

I love Lidl nappies though. The sizes do overlap, you'll find they move through 0,1,2 and 3 pretty quickly. We used size 4 and 5 for the llongest periods of time I think. Dd is now nearly 2 and in size 6.

I'd go with a pack of size 1 and see how you get on. My DD (7lb2) was in size 1 for 8 weeks. My DS (9lb1) was in them barely a week before we went up to size 2. The upper limit of 11b for size 1 seems crazy, at that weight my son was firmly into size 3.

How will I know when to move up to the next size? Will they leak? Sorry for being so naive!

If they leak and the next size up fits around the legs and waist, then move up a size. Don’t panic! It all makes much more sense when the baby is there, and they’ll help you in hospital/birthing centre. I changed my first (meconium-splattered) nappy in the middle of the night under the close supervision of a maternity care assistant, who was very patient with me Grin

Thank you! DH is a lot more laid back and keeps assuring me everything will be fine and we'll work it out but I'm a over thinker and worry that there's so much I don't know or that I'll be doing it wrong.

Start with size 1 unless you have an absolutely enormous baby. It kind of just becomes obvious when to move up, I ignored the weights on the packet and went by fit/leaking/how quickly they got full. I think they were in 1 for a matter of a few weeks. Ditto 2. So if you already have a few packets of each, and you have access to shops then I’d just forget stocking up. You’ll only find you prefer a different brand or something.

Deadleaf29 · 20/06/2021 21:47

You cannot do nappies wrong assuming you can tell which end of the baby is which. The very worst that happens is a bit of wee or poo goes everywhere, but that happens anyway with babies. A certain amount of trial and error is inevitable, each baby is different.

BertieBotts · 20/06/2021 21:51

It's just because babies are differently shaped and this can cause fit issues at the start and end of size ranges, so it's useful to have an overlap. DS2 always needed to go into the next size up ASAP, sometimes before he was the minimum weight. My friend's baby never wore anything higher than a size 4 before potty training! You won't know which size fits your baby until they are here, so buy a few brands and sizes and just do some trial and error.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 20/06/2021 21:59

Babies weight is subjective so go with size 1 and you'll probably find that you have to move up in a few weeks.
My 5lb 3oz baby was in size 0 (2-5lbs) for 3 months and is only now in size 3 at 10 months old. His big brother (2lb 14oz) was the same as he moved into size 0 at 5 weeks old and then moved into size 1 at 3 months. They stayed in the smaller sizes for longer as they were slim but bone dense babies so weighed more than they seemed.
