Find iPhone turned off?

Hi
Can anyone tell me how to tell if DC has turned off find iPhone?

When it doesn’t update due to poor signal then usually I just see the latest recorded time and location. I think it shows in red text.

However, a couple of times recently the phone has been showing ‘online’ yet the map just shows as completely blank.

DC says that they haven’t turned it off but this has coincided with supposedly staying at a friends house…

Any tech advice please?

(Btw whilst it might be interesting to discuss the ethics/wider debate of tracking children, I really just want an answer to my question, please !)

I find if I wait 10 minutes it will refresh and upload the location, unless it's only got 1 bar reception in that area.

timeisnotaline · 20/06/2021 09:02

I’d be tempted to say no overnight stays since your phone is so unreliable…

TeenTitan007 · 20/06/2021 09:04

They could turn off location services or just location sharing with you.

cocoloco987 · 20/06/2021 09:14

@cocoloco987 if it’s intrusive to want to know where my still 16yo DD is OVERNIGHT then I’ll gladly take that ‘criticism’

I said constant sharing of location on what's app might be a bit intrusive and suggested the other app instead - stating you don't have to move your older child over to that app too if the current arrangement or working for her! However it sounds like your daughter is going to find ways around it whatever you do so the other option is to not let her have over night stays if you need to know her exact location at all times.

@SoStrange

X post but copper she feigns ignorance about why we can’t ‘see’ her …

Btw if the battery issue is relevant here does the phone take off location to conserve itself or does it need to be actually done manually?

Enabling low power mode also turns off location services.

Both are technicalities.

BaseDrops · 20/06/2021 10:09

If you have set up family sharing. You should provided your child’s Apple ID is a CHILD Apple ID you can disable turning off location services.

You can’t disable turning on low power mode.

SoStrange · 20/06/2021 10:15

@cocoloco987, I apologise, I misread your post.

I don’t need to know where she is at all times- just after 10pm and overnight

@BaseDrops, we’re all on one ID for some reason with dh’s Apple ID but they know the password!

Well - it’s a choice to have everyone on the same Apple ID but it doesn’t give you any parental controls.

Have a read

You can’t disable turning on low power mode.

Yeah I think you still can...
Either from SETTINGS, BATTERY...
Or from the control centre.

Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood · 20/06/2021 13:00

This thread is making so much sense. I often have my phone in low power mode, hence DH not being able to see my location. I had no idea!

BaseDrops · 20/06/2021 13:11

Sorry if not clear.

As far as I can tell, as a parent using Apple family, you cannot disable your child’s ability to turn on low power mode.

This is interesting as I have similar issues with dd2.
We are all on the same apple id too.
Lots of times I can’t see her on find my iPhone but everyone else is still there.
I’m wondering if she is knocking off location services too now?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 20/06/2021 13:20

My battery save setting turns off location services. But I have no idea if it did as standard or if I set it up at some point…. I don’t remember setting it up but I might have.

BaseDrops · 20/06/2021 13:25

To sum up.

If you want parental controls at all - set up Apple family. There are many options within it that you may or may not want.

Using parent/child/Apple family screen restrictions:

You can - disable changing location settings.

You can’t - disable changing battery settings.

Disabling location settings is possible directly -using the option in Privacy or indirectly by putting a phone on low power mode which includes disables location settings.

Both of these will cause the no location behaviour in Find my IPhone.

Kinsters · 20/06/2021 13:42

That's interesting about low power mode - I wonder if it's the same in Google as I noticed my contacts sometimes don't refresh. I have my sister and DH locations shared with me. I'd kind of just assume that DD would join our family location sharing when she's old enough to be going off be herself, don't see how it's intrusive really. It's a safety/convenience thing.

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 13:50

To turn it off the email address linked to the iCloud account would be notified re it - so it’s not being turned off.

No emails across our family when one of us turns it off. That's usually because we are doing something sneaky and don't want to be seen (eg going somewhere specific for an upcoming birthday gift or turning up as a surprise for some reason) so an email would be mentioned for sure. We all have it on except DS18 who never goes anywhere except his girlfriends house but is quite principled about privacy and you gets DC who is still in primary school and doesn't go out alone. DH, DD19 and I on the other hand are nosey bastards Grin

Jojojojo55 · 20/06/2021 14:04

Is it as they are out of data, when at home using wi do, or data switched off, mine switch off to save data

BaseDrops · 20/06/2021 14:09

Location services need adata connection could be any of GPRS/3/4/5G or WiFi.

BaseDrops · 20/06/2021 14:17

Oh to complicate things.

Without Apple family and child Apple IDs you can set up restrictions on individual devices using settings/screen time.

It doesn’t provide the ability to make changes to child settings on the adult device - changes would have to be made on the child’s device. It also does not include all the abilities that Apple Family and Child Apple IDs cover. Like purchase approval, shared cloud storage, allow more time on the adult device.
