Bee killing dog!

I have successfully made a bee friendly garden.
Lots of fat happy buzzing bees visiting, going about thier business.

However I have a stupidly large German shepard who has decided these little buddies are bumbling slow flying snacks.

I'm just about ready to tape his mouth shut, another 2 little bees dead on the patio in the space of about 10 minutes.. we must be up to 20 bees in the last week alone.

The idea was to help population and create a safe wildlife haven, not lure them to thier death.

Part of me is posting just to get the rant out I guess, but is there anything, at all I can do to stop this behaviour?! I doubt there is, except the obvious, which is keeping him in the house at all times, which would be very cruel on him.

He doesn't ever seem to get stung either! I wish just one little bee would teach him a lesson and he might learn!

Poor bees :(

Put a muzzle on him when he's outside.

Could you plant the bee-friendly flowers into pots and place them a bit higher up somewhere?

30degreesandmeltinghere · 19/06/2021 22:20

Bee very careful. My df's dcat got stung in the throat once. Hefty vet bill..

powershowerforanhour · 19/06/2021 22:20

Release a load of wasps. That'll teach him.

powershowerforanhour · 19/06/2021 22:21

But sausagerole's idea is kinder and safer.

We had an adorable dog who used to eat bees. Yes, she got stung, no she didn't make the connection. She really was adorable, but a dog of very little brain, bless her.

I read that as the bee killing the dog!!!

Our spaniel is a nightmare so I have to keep a really close eye when he's in the garden especially when sleeps bees are about

Oh no, sorry! Grin Although it wouldn't surprise me if the bees rose up against said German Shepard, hes a killing machine.

Sadly, moving plants is not an option. I've planted wildflowers right next to the fence - which separates GS from lawyer garden area. Little bees seem to like bumbling from here, straight into the jaws of doom.

I feel like each destroyed little bee is just another needless death contributing to the decimated numbers of bee population :(

My dog used to kill be bees but she got stung once and now hides under the coffee table if she sees one.

Try muzzling him, basket ones are good as it doesn’t restrict their breathing and you can still feed him treats. Let him be outside with you, distract him every time he is interested in a bee and reward him each time he comes away. Not full proof, but might help him learn?

The6thQueen · 20/06/2021 10:59

That said, both our dogs have always chased flies and bees (mostly unsuccessfully). We can them sky raisins and jalapeño sky raisins Grin

call*

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 20/06/2021 11:01

Idiot dog will get stung.

Keep some antihistamine handy.

MegaClutterSlut · 20/06/2021 11:20

My small dog the size of a rat likes to try and eat bees, not just bees flies too. She was once successful with a bee and had a huge swollen lip. This has not stopped her trying to eat more though Hmm but she does stop trying to get them when I shout no though so I have to constantly watch her when we're in the garden
