Kindle or book light?

Sheerdetermination · 19/06/2021 20:39

I’d like to read in the dark without disturbing my baby, who is next to me. Can you recommend a good clip-on book light or would a Kindle be a better idea? Thanks

Kindles are amazing.

FindingMeno · 19/06/2021 20:45

I was so so reluctant to get a kindle, but now I have I realise its a complete game changer!

Kindle! I love mine after a few years of resistance. Definitely the best option with a small baby. I also used to pop it in my changing bag in case I got stuck in the car nap trapped!

Kindle Paperwhite. No contest.

Yup love my kindle! My husband works nights so it means if I wake early I can read without disturbing him!

UltimateIrritant · 19/06/2021 21:08

@Sheerdetermination Definitely Kindle. But wait to buy until Monday when it's Prime Day!

scrivette · 19/06/2021 21:26

Going against the grain, but I got a round the neck reading light from Amazon and it's brilliant. I can read in bed even when laying down, it's got three different settings and it's not uncomfortable at all.

Ironmanrocks · 19/06/2021 21:59

I just use the kindle app on my phone. I use a black background with white writing so it doesn't disturb my Husband and it doesn't hurt my eyes. I've read a ton of free books, abs I've bought a couple for 99p. Works for me.

I have a kobo and I love it and you can borrow library books on it and request them them so they let you know when they are available.

@NNat

Could I please jump on and ask wise Kindle owners if it's possible to read library books on Kindle? I read a lot of borrowed library books on my ipad but can't do it when commuting. Kindle would be ideal on the tube - is this an option or is this for amazon books only?
I believe kindles only support amazon kindle books

You can’t read library books on a Kindle in the UK, but you can on a Kobo if your library uses Libby/Overdrive. I had a Kindle for years, but recently got a Kobo for library books and it’s been great.

Thank you for your thoughts!
I have just bought a ‘Mighty Bright’ light to try, but I suspect it may cast out too much light. I hadn’t heard of Kobo e-readers and also like to borrow library books, so that’s very useful advice.
I will report back when I’ve found my solution...

Kindle, as it's one handed. Brand is unimportant.

Newborns are quite respectful of your space but once your baby gets to about 4 months old they are always trying to grab whatever you're doing so if you want to read while feeding then one handed is important!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2021 15:43

Kindle app on your phone?

gingerninja99 · 20/06/2021 15:45

You can read library books on the kindle via the Libby app, you can't just download the app from kindle though you have to get it via silk, it's a little faff but I have it on my kindle

BertieBotts · 20/06/2021 16:38

Is that not just for the Kindle Fire? Normal Kindles don't do apps. If I wanted to read on a backlit screen then I'd do so on my phone.

gingerninja99 · 20/06/2021 21:37

Ooh maybe actually, didn't think of that! Well spotted Grin

CoRhona · 21/06/2021 00:18

Kindle app on phone for op and @NNat, Libby app on phone gives you library books and audiobooks.

Sheerdetermination · 21/06/2021 07:03

I found reading, one-handed, with a book light too fiddly last night. An e-reader it will have to be...

Kindle fire can take free library books. I signed up to my local library and use an app called overdrive. I can borrow up to 6 books at a time but I think others can borrow up to 30 in different areas. It's been a life changer as I was spending a fortune on books!
reluctantbrit · 21/06/2021 08:02

I have insomnia flaring up every now and then and read a lot at night.

I have a kindle paperwhite and prefer it to reading on a tablet at night. The glare is too much and a normal ipad to big, a phone too small to read on. I can lie on my side with the kindle and it is also a lot lighter.

We looked at the Kobo but we found our library wasn't supporting enough books. I read at night mostly books from Kindle unlimited and just don't want to buy these all the time.
