DC knocked adult front teeth out

SlothInATreeSituation · 19/06/2021 13:38

My poor DC (7) has just knocked 4 front teeth out. 3 were their adult teeth.

He's seeing the emergency dentist. Unfortunately the teeth weren't kept.

Can anyone give me any comfort or a handhold please? I'm so upset for them.

It’s a shock for sure, i know a few people this has happened too. it happened to our next door neighbours little girl (who we are good friends with)

She was told that they could t put the teeth back in as they were milk teeth and would have to wait for adult ones to come in, but she looks so cute with her gappy smile.

Then I know two people who had this as children but I’ve known them as adults (one on a trampoline and kneed himself in the mouth!). They both had false teeth put in which you’d never know - Presumably the dentist will fit a few false teeth in place?

He will be absolutely fine, please don’t worry

Soontobe60 · 19/06/2021 13:49

I knocked out a front tooth when I was 10. Tried to reimplant it with no success so had a false tooth on a plate for 15 years - I hated it! When I was 25 I had a bridge done - it’s still in situ 35 years later. I’d say, have as much done s possible as having no front teeth is bloody awful. Even if you have to sell the family silver.

Implant implant implant if you can afford it. Can children even have implants?

It’s amazing what a good private dentist can do. I had broken front teeth and the NHS dentist just shrugged and said my mouth was healthy, it was non-essential to fix, I’d just have to put up with it, etc. For years it really affected my self esteem. Then on a friend’s advice I switched to a private dentist and they were like “yes of course, whatever you want, if you have the money we can fix it”. Totally different attitude. It was expensive but worth it.

Oinkypig · 19/06/2021 14:22

If the adult teeth have been knocked out and not kept his only option will be a little denture to start but that can knocked up ASAP. The Lyn referral to the nearest dental hospital paediatric department where they will have a trauma clinic. He won’t be able to have implants until he is at least 18 ( as current techniques change this may change) due to the fact his maxilla will continue to grow for many years. A little sticky bridge might be possible when his canine teeth erupt for his teenage years.

To try and give a tiny tiny bit of comfort if his adult teeth are gone and can’t be reimplanted he will avoid lots of complicated and invasive treatment he would otherwise need to try and save them. There is no need to see a private dentist they won’t be able to do anymore than an NHS dentist at this stage.

I do hope your son is ok it must be such a shock for you all.

Blahblahblah21 · 19/06/2021 15:01

My son knocked an adult tooth out in a scooter accident when he was 6, it was still emerging. We couldn’t find the tooth so it couldn’t be attached. The whole thing was so traumatic so I feel your pain.
After the swelling went down the dentist took some moulds and he had a plate with a tooth fitted which looked great & you would never know it was fake.
He is now 13 & still has a plate but is being seen by the ortho for the next stage. He will have to have a brace to get the teeth back in the right place & have a tooth on a plate which will have to attach with denture fix. Once teeth have moved they will fit a bridge which will stay in place until he’s 18ish & can have an implant.
It is such a shock but it is amazing what can be done x

milinhas · 19/06/2021 15:09

My cousin broke her two front teeth and now has full crowns and you really can’t tell - it’s not fun of course but it is fixable!

doadeer · 19/06/2021 15:16

I knocked my adult teeth out on my 9th birthday. There was no option to re-insert. I'm sorry to say I had some miserable years with a denture but then I got a bridge. I had to adapt how I eat... Can't bite anything hard like a baguette or an apple, can't eat corn on the cob.

For me the procedure for implants was going to take years including braces and adding bone back in where it had receded. At 31 I've decided I'm fine with my bridge. I've had another one fitted as an adult and I'm used to it now.

So sorry for your child. It was hugely traumatic for me.

YerAWizardHarry · 19/06/2021 15:18

@idontlikealdi implants can’t be fit until they’ve stopped growing usually around 19/20 for females and closer to 25 in males from what I’ve experienced

20viona · 19/06/2021 15:20

Get him referred to the restorative dentistry department at your local hospital and this may need a combined approach of orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry. It's a long road and I'm sorry this has happened it's my worst nightmare. In the mean time he needs a spoon denture to fill the gap for now and eventually a nice implant retained bridge when he's late teens early twenties.

PurpleFadesToGreen · 19/06/2021 15:21

Slightly different but my DC broke their 2 front top teeth in half in an accident when they were 10.

13 now.
Originally the teeth were rebuilt with filling type stuff.

They lasted really really well, they're now having treatment at the London dental hospital due to abcess around one of the teeth.

Implants not possible till 18 due to jaw growth.

hamstersarse · 19/06/2021 15:21

My ds knocked out one front tooth when he was 14

It’s been a bit of a pain tbh. Dentist put in temporary crowns which looked fine, but they’ve come off multiple times. Just this week he finally had a ‘permanent’ crown put in, having walked around with a big gap for 2 months (Covid innit)

I hated seeing him with the gap....makes me really....what is it? Shame? Disgust? Sad? Not sure?

It’ll get fixed, don’t worry but I get the upset on it 🥺

HotWeather · 19/06/2021 15:24

Oh OP how upsetting for you both. I am sure a dentist can do something, and as others have said implants when he is older. What a shock for you both, but do remember it is not life threatening and fixable with time.

SlothInATreeSituation · 19/06/2021 15:26

Thanks for responding.

Especially those giving me a bit of comfort and hope. Still feel in shock to be honest.

justanotherneighinparadise · 19/06/2021 15:57

Oh you poor thing. Was it a sporting accident? I always understood of you drop teeth into a glass of milk to keep them clean the dentist can reinsert them. I have no idea if that’s an old wives tale 😬

I would imagine at this stage there will be a period of healing and then in the future it will be a plate or implants assuming there’s not enough tooth left for a root canal and veneers.

Violetroselily · 19/06/2021 16:15

When I was 4 or 5 I fell and knocked my two top front adult teeth back up into my gum. The trauma killed the teeth and they eventually fell out in my early teens. I had a series of fake teeth on a palette until I had a bridge fitted at 16 or so. I'll eventually have implants but for now the bridge is doing a sterling job.

Dentists can do amazing things these days. I hope your DS isn't in too much pain

Rosesareyellow · 19/06/2021 16:18

A girl I knew knocked one of hers out playing hockey. I don’t know what the dental procedure was but she had something sorted. Dentists can do great things, I wouldn’t be too upset although I know it’s difficult.

CagneyNYPD · 19/06/2021 16:30

My DS knocked his 2 front teeth out (one complete, one not quite) on a trampoline when he was 11. We did have a fair bit of time with the dental (oral/maxillofacial) dept at the hospital and our own NHS dentist to try to save both teeth. To varying success. He will need an implant as an adult.

2 years on and he is now with the orthodontist. And he has taken it all in his stride.

I was devastated when it happened. Really shocked. But 2 years on, he really is fine about it. Braces will go on next month. But all is OK. I really, really feel for you. It's horrid.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/06/2021 16:36

my brother went face first over the handle bars of his bicycle 35+ years ago, lost a front tooth, broke his nose and cheekbone. He has an implant that screws into his jaw that he can take out if he really wants , but otherwise it stays in all the time says it doesn't bother him/he doesn't really notice it. I'm sure dentistry had come on a lot since then!

The biggest problem will be if their jaw is still developing, there might need to be a temporary solution for a while.

user1471538283 · 19/06/2021 16:54

This happened to one of DSs friends but he was older. Once the swelling went down he had implants and you would never know.

tenlittlecygnets · 19/06/2021 17:05

Oh OP, your poor dc. What happened?

That sounds really traumatic, but hopefully you have a good dentist who will be able to explain all options.
