Suncream allergy

My sister has had a reaction to this suncream. (Puffy face, eyes, lips).

Can anyone recommend a different suncream to try? Any idea what the allergen might be? Would an allergy test figure it out? No idea where to start.

I react to a lot of suncreams, particularly if I get hot and sweaty. I've come back from holiday looking like i was burnt but it was a red rash all over my arms! P20 works best for me.

Try one of the sensitive skin ones. My dc has a bad reaction to suncream and we've found that the La Roche-Posay sensitive one works really well and has caused no issues. It's expensive though! Alternatively, the mineral-based (non-nano zinc) ones also work well (Badger), but they are very chalky white and not easy to apply (and you look like a ghost).

I can only use the Piz Bruin sensitive lotion. Nivea, Boots, Johnson&Johnson all give me horrendous rashes - I was actually hospitalised in Majorca the reaction was so bad.

My Mum can only use the Nivea

My DS can only use Lloyds pharmacy own brand childrens.

It's all been a bit trial and error, and we all live in dread of the 'new improved' formula badge on the bottle!

I struggle with a fragrance ingredient called linalool, is that in this cream?

DD is allergic to almost everything and we've tried prob 30 different ones over the years. This is the only one she can use. It's a right royal pain in the arse!

Has your sister used other Nivea products without a reaction?

I have an awful reaction to all Nivea products (at least all I have ever tried). From an unrelated reaction that needed medical treatment I discovered that I am allergic to coconut oil, which is in most nivea products and quite a lot of natural/environmentally friendly soaps/shampoos/skin care products (plus loads of vegan food- which is another totally gross thread in it's own right!)

Sillydoggy · 18/06/2021 10:01

Another vote for Piz Buin sensitive - the once a day cream causes a reaction but not the sensitive.

That one really irritates my son. He gets on well with boots and Superdrug ones. It is just trial and error as everyone is so different. Try a little patch before trying it all over. Good luck!

helpfulperson · 18/06/2021 10:02

That's the only one I'm allergic to.

There is no real logic to it I dont think and therefore just a bit of trial and error.

crispinglovershighkick · 18/06/2021 10:09

OP if you want to try a mineral ss the Drunk Elephant one isn't too bad and the ingredients are 'clean' as far as these things go. It goes on slightly white but rubs in easily and in time the slight chalkiness disappears. It's nothing like the old fashioned ones that made you look blue, but possibly depends on how light or dark your skin is.

Altruist sun cream is the BOMB. It's developed my drs and dermatologists. My sun has oral allergy syndrome and is allergic to so many things it's unreal. I have lots of allergies to. Altruist is the best we have ever found.

Proudpeacock · 18/06/2021 10:37

My MIL seems to be allergic to suncream with alcohol in. Could it be that? There are some alcohol free ones out there but it takes a bit of looking.
