Different career options

I'm 35 and have gone back to work after having DC2. I'm not having any more children and now want to try and either re-train or establish a career but really stuck on ideas after not being shortlisted for an accelerated social work programme where I would've qualified as a SW, the programme is government funded and runs every two years so may apply for the next programme scheduled for 2024.

I've worked in a LA for over 8 years and worked in 3 different departments in that time. I don't want to out myself too much but the department I currently work in doesn't have any scope for progression. I used to work in Housing as a Housing Officer which I really enjoyed, there is a vacancy currently but it's a pay grade lower and compared to other LAs the pay is very low and too low for me to apply.

I asked my manager if I could work full-time in my current role (currently part-time) so I could get as much experience as possible and was informed there is no budget.

I'm stuck in a rut, I want a career where I progress, starting salary needs to be 25k+ for living costs/nursery fees. I used to be a primary school teacher but would never go back to teaching but did enjoy working with children. I also like working for a LA, it's flexible, good pension etc.

I'm leaning towards the civil service but can I realistically expect to find a post for 25k? I don't want to go back to uni because of the expense but am willing to take a role that is slightly less if there is definite progression.

I see posts like mine on MN and the advice is really good and hoping I'll get some inspiration!

Bumping for you OP in the hopes you get some good options from others.

If you liked working as a Housing Officer those roles are frequently available so I think keep looking there. Have you attended any job fairs? There are a few near me who have gone online due to covid. Try looking at local colleges for dates of these as they can be helpful in showing you what's available in your area and some can give good advice based on your skills.
Good luck!
