Is anyone thinking of going to Iceland this summer?

I have been looking and toying with the idea….am I mad?

I like the pizzas they sell there…

Some are even better than Tesco WinkSmile

Nannyamc · 17/06/2021 23:47

The temperature is only about 14 degrees in summer
Its a beautiful place lots to see and do. It is very expensive but its a fantastic.
Recommend.

Silkiecats · 18/06/2021 00:23

I would like to go but kids aren't vaccinated so rules it out for us.

Scarby9 · 18/06/2021 00:31

I went 20 years ago. Fabulous.

LemonRoses · 18/06/2021 00:34

One of our favourite countries. We go twice each winter usually.
Summer is warmer, obviously and very beautiful but less likely to see aurora balanced against more chance of seeing whales.
We’re looking to do the Arctic Way, probably in the autumn.

Food isn’t a great highlight, but survivable. Very friendly, very welcoming. Alcohol is expensive. Reykjavik is tiny, interesting but tiny. Hire a 4x4 and drive yourself to other parts rather than doing trips. Driving is fine in summer.

Seeingadistance · 18/06/2021 01:07

Yes. I want to see the volcano!

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/06/2021 01:08

It's absolutely beautiful. Incredibly expensive though.

garlictwist · 18/06/2021 06:16

I was supposed to be going and had flights booked from last year but we have cancelled - not everything is open and you still have to pay for tests etc to get into the country.

ChocOrange1 · 18/06/2021 06:20

We went there on a cruise and i was glad we chose that method of transport because the food in Iceland was not good, and everything was VERY expensive. We got to see the sights while enjoying our all inclusive excellent food on board.

A lot of things are very spread out, so you would want to have a method of transport as if you just stayed in Reykjavik you would quickly run out of things to do I think.

cupsofcoffee · 18/06/2021 06:27

I would love to go but I don't think I'd bother this summer as it's really expensive and not everything will be open or available.

Atalune · 18/06/2021 07:19

Thank you for the input.

I was wondering about the food..,,,☹️

I was reading ok the Iceland embassy that children I think are exempt from being vaccinated and just have to have. PCR on artiv which I free…

Hadn't occurred to me, but a work colleague went there a few years ago with his family and loved it and recommends it.

Atalune · 18/06/2021 08:44

I did not have my glasses on when I wrote that last message!!

I was looking at the website and think that children are exempt from vaccinations but need a pcr on arrival. So no biggie.

Was wondering about the day to day costs though so that’s something to consider.

I went 5 years ago. Eating out isn’t cheap but I don’t mind on holiday as we do a lot of city breaks which tend to be more expensive anyway. I wouldn’t want to give you exact prices as it was years ago. Maybe look at restaurants and menus for an idea?

Did all the touristy things and we loved it. But we went in March and it was like a snowy adventure. The waterfalls were frozen. Snow everywhere. We saw the northern lights though had to chase them down.

I’d go back in summer and explore different places to what we did last time. There’s so much to do. My cousin actually camped in summer and loved it. It looks like a completely different holiday at that time of year.

Spinningaround21 · 18/06/2021 08:52

We stayed in Reykjavik and didn’t once run out of things to do, plenty of tours out of the city. You can also rent cars to other places. Or stay in other places but we only did 4 nights.

Cowbells · 18/06/2021 08:53

It's an amazing country. I went at Christmas so there were only 4 hours of daylight but it was still one of the best holidays ever. Swimming in the secret lagoon thermal pool under starlight... The geysers, waterfalls, thermal pools are all incredible. The people are so friendly.

Seeingadistance · 18/06/2021 10:13

I’ve been twice before - both times in the middle of summer so endless daylight.

First time we used AirBnB, and stayed in a family home in Reyyakvik while they were on holiday in Sweden. Very much a home from home. Didn’t eat out much as horrendously expensive. DS loved the hotdogs which are cheap (for Iceland) and tasty and very much a thing there. Went to the Bonus supermarket for shopping. Bought the city card which covered bus travel, museums and galleries and also the swimming pools. Didn’t bother with the Blue Lagoon, but went twice a day to the local pools.

Second time, I hired a car and we stayed in youth hostels so got to see more of the country. Had to book hostels well in advance, and some in the more popular areas were fully booked. It was just me and DS, and all apart from one night we stayed in a twin room. Most hostels have family rooms, and even when we were in a ‘dorm’ it had 4 beds so might work for a family.

Iceland is amazing - I can’t wait to go back.

StormzyinaTCup · 18/06/2021 10:21

We went in Summer 2019 and it was the best holiday we have had to date. We rented a timber type lodge 30 mins outside Reykjavik and self catered (which I know is not everyone's holiday cup of tea) as we knew eating out would be expensive and I didn't find the supermarket that much more expensive than over here tbh. There is loads to do and see and the majority of it is free.I would say hiring a substantial car/4wd was fairly essential so you can get off the beaten track and go at your own pace. We took the car and went as far as Westernfjords off the tourist trail to do a whale watching trip which was the highlight for me.

We did drop into a KFC in one of the bigger towns on the way back from a particularly long day out and ordered 4 chicken burgers and 3 portions of chips and two drinks and it cost £53.00!! (just to give an idea).

As spinningaround21 we would love to go back but in reverse and see it in the winter with the snow etc.

I think it's the same as any holiday abroad, you can make it as reasonable or as expensive as you like.

Atalune · 18/06/2021 15:05

Thank you all for the input. If we go we will most defo rent a car to get about.

Feeling a bit excited but also a bit worried that it will just get cancelled anyway. The delta variant is no joke by the sounds of it

Love the KFC prices- sounds a lot like Disney Paris! We had fast food there and I think it was sixty odd euros! 😬😬.

Have heard about the city cats which seems like great value.

I need to look into the covid restrictions a bit more but I think it’s doable x

I’ve been 3 times, it’s an amazing place. Very much an outdoorsy holiday though, would recommend waterproof trousers etc.

It is so so beautiful and changes so much. The landscape there is just something else.
