Help - does anyone know what the liquid is in a "bike bell" compass?

My friend has a compass on their child's bike, it's like a little ball in liquid in a clear bigger ball. The liquid looks clear.
It broke and came off with a small hole and I'm worried a child may have put it in their mouth. It has a distinctive smell. A quick Google doesn't tell me what's in it, just "in liquid".
Informed help welcome, thanks!

Alcohol or oil I'd guess. It will be in such a tiny quantity that I can't imagine anyone would have imbibed enough to have any ill effects.

Isopar - call 111/ posions centre urgently.

Sometimes that's mineral oil. Can be ethylated spirit. Synthetic isoparaffins also common in liquid compasses.

Oh, yikes! It's moments like this that I realise how daft I can be.

My first thought was glycerine, but I'm pretty sure that does not have a distinctive smell.

Yes OP, call the poison unit asap.

Thanks all, that has helped narrow things down. It smells paraffin-like (i'm not an expert though!) so isopar is possible. Medical help is being sought. Child seems fine at the moment and likelihood is next to nothing was ingested but playing it safe and taking advice.
