What to listen to on Radio 4?

I don't listen to radio as such but I listen to the occasional Radio play, usually ghost stories, while cleaning. I've just discovered the Radio 4 documentaries and they're fascinating. I wish that I'd discovered them sooner.

It's made me wonder what other Radio 4 shows I might be missing out on. I'd appreciate any suggestions on shows or particular episodes, of any genre that you'd recommend I try.

TIA

Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics
You’re Dead to Me (the long version not the radio edits)
Fortunately with Fi and Jane
The Listening Project
More or Less
How to Vaccinate the World (same team as More or Less)
It’s a Fair Cop

The Life Scientific
Desert Island Discs

Love Radio 4!

The Reunion is often very good too, and I do like Paddy O’Connell on Broadcasting House on a Sunday morning.

Avoid The Moral Maze like the plague or your blood pressure with be sky high.

It depends. The last one about swearing was interesting.

Thank you all to everyone who has replied since my last post. I'm very grateful for the suggestions.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned The Untold. That has covered some very interesting real life stores.

Tracks was brilliant although they kept changing the main character. 5 series if I remember correctly.
The Raj Quartet, Agatha Christie series, Wimsey, Julie Enfield investigates. Some don't stay long on Sounds so you can sometimes find them on youtube or the Internet Archive website.
Grace Dent presents the Untold, about seemingly ordinary people with fascinating stories to tell.
Paradise, Death in ice valley are great. Lovecraft investigations fictional but presented like a real life podcast. Generally good but last series a bit of a disappointment.
Open country, Ramblings with Clare Balding.
Some good documentaries on the World service too which is available on sounds - -the Forum, Crowdscience.

there is just so much to love about radio 4 as the above illustrates...
a couple of things that I don't think have been mentioned:
the recent series of 'bridget christie: mortal' was glorious.
rob newman's half-full philosophy hour looks like it is still available too.
there's a new series of 'simon evans goes to market' coming up soon, and that will be great.

Dead Ringers on a Friday evening (when it's on)

@AledsiPad

I really like The Lovecraft Investigations and Fault Lines. Also enjoyed Where this service will… (it’s what got me into radio drama), Broken English and Body Horror which features Jill Halfpenny.
Haven't listened to the first two you mention but loved the others, thanks for this thread I'm bookmarking so much on bbc sounds!

I like most of these apart from The Archers and a couple of the comedies mentioned (although I love the News Quiz, the Now Show, It's a Fair Cop, John Finnemore and Cabin Pressure).

I don't think anyone's mentioned The Long View. It's on Tuesday mornings. It looks at an incident from history, what that tells us about society at the time and compares it to something in the news. This week, for example, they discuss an attempted rape in 1875 and the current debate about the safety of women in public spaces.

There's a new series of Sideways starting on Wednesday. I really enjoyed the first series. It looked behind various phenomena such as women who were wrongly convicted of killing their babies because of an acceptance of expert testimony based on a lack of understanding of statistics. There was also a really good episode about Stockholm syndrome and how the writers who first wrote about it didn't understand the woman's behaviour (and it explained how brave and rational she was, and why it made sense for her to distrust the police and the government), largely because they didn't bother speaking to her.

Round Britain Quiz is easily the best quiz on the radio. The latest series has finished now but it's available on BBC Sounds.

Broadcasting House on Sunday mornings is a good magazine news programme.

From Our Own Correspondent on Thursday mornings has short reports from foreign correspondents which give you an insight into the countries which they are reporting from.

The fantasic I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue has just started a new series - Sunday lunchtime and Mondays at half past 6.

If you switch on Radio 4 and you don't find the programme which is on interesting, try switching to Radio 4 Extra which is basically the Radio 4 repeat/archive station.

There is an Arts and Ideas podcast from Radio 3 which has some very interesting interviews with experts but some I find less interesting than others. Matthew Sweet is interviewing on many of them and is very good.
Radio 3 also has a drama on a Sunday evening (which I usually forget to listen to .......not enough hours in the day) which lasts and hour and a half.

Thank you to the poster who recommended Where This Service Will… I just listened to the whole thing this weekend and it was lovely!

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 27/06/2021 16:01

Fortunately- it’s brilliant
