If you were travelling from Cornwall to London

Where would you stop for a few nights?

Going to stay with friends in Cornwall but need to break up the journey on the way home due to youngest not doing well with long car journeys. We thought we could extend the holiday and stay somewhere nice for a few nights rather than a Motorway Travel Lodge like we are doing on the way there!

Anyone have any ideas or have done similar?

Sorry to rain on your parade but I would say Dorset but you'll struggle to find anywhere with vacancies!

Maybe the New Forest, Salisbury or Winchester?

You could try the Torquay area. It's a tourist area but there is a lot of accommodation so it might not all be booked out.

There is also a premier inn at Newton Abbot racecourse which I doubt is booked out unless there is a race meeting. While not exciting in its own right, the area is nice to explore for a few days.

Salisbury is also nice, Winchester is probably too close to home. Or you could go via Bristol and stay there.

Near Honiton in Devon. It’s a nice area on the edge of the Blackdown Hills with loads of great days out with kids:
Diggerland
Crealy’s
The Bear Trail
Wildwood Escot
Beer quarry caves
Beer Heights and Pecorama
Seaton Tramway

Smallicombe Farm is our favourite place to stay, but if we can’t get in there then we’ve stayed in the Barn at Wellington Farm B&B, the Barn at Rose Farm B&B and Home Farm Hotel.

Thanks everyone lots of suggestions so lots of googling later!

I know we have left it so late but friends in Cornwall were going abroad but have cancelled that now so have invited us down to stay. The drive would be ok in one go but the 7 year old has horrendous car sickness so we need to try and break it down into two smaller journeys if possible 🤞

What are you doing about the journey going?

BooksChocolateAndSleep · 17/06/2021 16:04

@Crunchymum we have just booked a travel lodge in Ilminster just for the night but that will just be somewhere to sleep and have breakfast, on the way back we wanted somewhere nicer to make it part of the holiday.

We regularly drive from Hampshire to the far tip of Cornwall with a very travel sick dd.
She sits in the front and we set off at about 4am so that she (and the other dc) fall back asleep pretty quickly and we beat any traffic!
It has never failed. She takes travel sickness tablets and uses the sea bands but if she’s awake for too long, she’s sick even with them.
Not sure about where to stop off and stay but I highly recommend a very early start.
