The nicest thing a neighbour has ever done for you?

Neighbours get a really bad rep on here. So I thought I might see if anyone else has lovely neighbours or is it just us?

So for starters not only did the neighbours stay completely positive, in the face of huge disruption during our recent building works, and look after our garden and pets while we were on holiday but they even dealt with the remains of a very pungent dead fox that crawled under our shed to die whilst we were away.

Anyone else have the antithesis of mums net neighbours?

We regularly get cakes from our neighbours and hand cakes over... it ramped up a lot over lockdown. Our other neighbour hands in apples and we usually give him some of whatever we make with them or other fruit/veg we grow. We also get random bottles of beer from next door and DD and DDog get treats. There is always some who will happily do the usual putting bins out or bringing them in if someone is on holiday or take in parcels when noone is home. On the whole our street is lovely and we're glad we live here.

Our old neighbours handed us their wifi password the day we moved in so we could use it until ours was set up. Then when I had my first DC they got us a lovely loaf of bread from a good bakery each week for a few months!

Nightfeedwatcher · 16/06/2021 19:59

So many nice things!
Including handing over ice lollies/bbq food and putting the bins out
As someone said above too the neighbours on one side always say they never hear the children if I try to apologise for the noise!

One evening our dog became ill ( she had heart failure, but we didn't know that at the time). DD, the only driver had had a can of larger. It was during the first lockdown, so things were pretty hairy. Phoned NDN, explained the dilemma, she came straight out, directed DD to the back seat of her car and dog and drive them to the vets. Then waited while darling dog was treated and drove them home.

She's a lovely, lovely woman and we all hope here she never moves.

When I got married, my lovely older neighbours across the road came out as I was leaving my house to get into the wedding car in my wedding dress, and the husband played 'Here Comes the Bride' on his violin while she sang the words, in the middle of the road. I don't have much of a relationship with my actual parents so this felt like having the sort of parents I would have loved to have had. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried a bit - one of the loveliest things anyone has ever done for me, I'll always cherish it.

Sardine
He and his wife were an utter delight .
The bastards that bought their house used their names in a credit fraud. Postman might have had a clue as he put several lots of final demand type letters addressed to him, through my door and I forwarded them to him. That's how police etc got involved. Took him ages to sort out. The new lot did a moonlight flit and took the kitchen sink and the radiators.

When i moved into my first flat there was a lovely lady in the house next door who brought me a hamper of goodies when I moved in. She came round for coffee and would sneakily check my fridge and cupboards, then come back later with bags of groceries for me. During the cold winters my flat windows would get stuck open so she'd demand I stay with her for the night.

roguetomato · 16/06/2021 20:12

Oh I have lovely neighbours too. I'm foreign, and we don't have family near by, so the elderly neighbour was a bit like my dc's grans for years. They always cared for us.

Another neighbour sadly passed away, but she gave us a lovely flower basket when my dc was born. She was very ill so soon after she passed away. We planted the cut branches in the basket and it has rooted. Now it's a quite big tree bringing lots of birds and bees to our garden.

Once at old house DH said to me we need to get DS to hospital now and we are leaving this minute. I assumed he meant all of us so I rushed to get DD ran out and shut down. To discover him just driving off with DS and I realised he must have meant just him and DS. Then I realised I had gone out without anything on either of us as we were just planning on getting in car and DH had money, keys, phone etc and it was heavy rain.

A neighbour came over and took us over to her house, said we could use her phone, made us drinks and gave DD a snack then said she had to pop out for shopping and left us her house to ourselves and keys and her kids upstairs. She said if DH stayed overnight she could ring a friend and get us beds for the night. She was so kind, thankfully DH and DS came back that night.

Neighbours are friendly here and there are several street parties each January in people's houses which whole street is invited to.

When DC1 was a baby and I was a walking zombie from lack of sleep I locked my car keys in the car in the supermarket car park. Luckily I had my phone - and the baby - but I didn't know what to do. DH phoned the neighbours, they let themselves into our house, found the spare car key, and drove to the supermarket to find me. They've also reassured me many a time that our double glazing windows are great sound insulation, and isn't it nice to hear children playing in the garden. The other side are just as nice. We've been really lucky.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 16/06/2021 20:19

I suffer from severe depression and struggle to keep on top of the garden so the grass was waist high during the first lockdown. My lovely neighbour spent hours out there strimming and it meant the world to me that someone would help like that.

fibeee · 16/06/2021 20:21

My next door neighbour saw me once when I was ridiculously upset about something. They came over and gave me a really genuine long hug which I needed at the time.

ElmtreeMama · 16/06/2021 20:21

My neighbour popped out with a cold drink for me when she saw me looking hot in my garden!

I have lovely neighbours. In my old house they used to get bread milk etc for when we got back from holiday. We have since moved, but in my new house:

One set of neighbours (who works in the NHS) got an NHS consultant to call me about my disabled son who needed an operation which at the time was only available on a particular pathway on commissioning. It got my son transferred to a centre for excellence in the UK, an operation and follow up. It saved so much stress. The same neighbour then came to visit us in hospital, and brought gifts for my son.

A few years later the same neighbour took my son in on the day my husband had a road traffic accident, I phoned her occasionally and it went from yes leave him here, to shall I feed him, to I'll read him a story and get him to sleep, pick him up whenever you are ready. With lots of don't worry he's fine.

Another neighbour when my son was in hospital kept leaving groceries on our doorstep so we never had to shop. And refused to take payment.

Another neighbour I will always remember from when my toddler DS was having a complete tantrum in the middle of a road. It was a child but he sat next to my toddler, and calmed him down on one of those days, calmed him (and me) down and then calmly walked home with us.

In the event of emergency I would never want to live anywhere else. I live in a city but it feels like a village. I would trust my son with so many of my neighbours, all of whom are in our corner.

Gumbo · 16/06/2021 20:21

Saved my life after I'd choked and lost consciousness. And he clearly isn't on Mumsnet as he actually answered the door to my frantic DS''s hammering Shock, came running over and fought to get me breathing again.

I've had some bad neighbours in my life, but this neighbour is truly wonderful Smile

LadyLolaRuben · 16/06/2021 20:22

Took my dog in and looked after her for 2 months when my dad had a brain haemorrhage and I was at the hospital with him.

DoingItMyself · 16/06/2021 20:24

Mine was having a skip to remove rubbish and took all mine (and there was a lot) as well as his own. I'm very grateful. It was a few weeks ago and I'm still overawed by it, actually.

Walked the streets looking for my cat when he went missing whilst I was in work. When we located the cat she and her husband helped us enormously in rescuing him.

TroysMammy · 16/06/2021 20:29

With a previous cat who sadly got run over she came with me to bring him home so I could bury him. After it was done I went out and when I came home she'd put a rose on his grave. Her name is Rose. When his brother died from heart disease a few years later and I buried him, she placed a black and white cat planter, which were their colours, on their grave.

Buttermaflooby · 16/06/2021 20:33

My neighbour is a GP. He's the nicest person ever. Buys my DC Christmas and birthday presents and constantly offers advice if he realises the DC are poorly (we try not to pester but have asked about the odd rash) he's just amazing. Plus all the usual stuff like taking in parcels, taking out bins if we forget and he brings yummy treats round for the festivals they celebrate. Lovely people all round.

Sootybear · 16/06/2021 20:33

I've moved now and getting to know my neighbours who seem lovely, but my old ndn were fab and I still miss them. Loads of things they helped me with. Catching a live pigeon stuck down my chimney, helping pull down a ceiling following a leak, taking me shopping as I didn't drive, basically we are friends and still are. Love my old neighbours.

BirdyBee · 16/06/2021 20:39

Came over at just after 3am to catch a huge spider that had crawled into my daughters light projecting a huge shadow on the lampshade, my daughters screaming woke them up!! They were so lovely and removed the spider!
