Soundofshuna · 15/06/2021 21:33

Mangotsfield secondary options are not good

Figgygal · 15/06/2021 21:37

Why those areas?
Are you moving for work?
Bristol commutes can be awful so definitely consider where you need to commute to (if that’s an issue)

Out of the 3 - Mangotsfield.

Better schools can be found in Yate/Chipping Sodbury - more South Gloucestershire than Bristol. 10/15 mins from Mangotsfield.

Techno56 · 15/06/2021 21:50

Whitchurch is on the other side of the city to the other two and south Bristol has a very different feel, I think. I live one side and work on the other. Feels close to the countryside in Whitchurch, and the schools are good or very good at primary stage but secondary, very tricky!

Roasted02 · 15/06/2021 21:52

I agree, Mangotsfield however as pp said, the traffic is horrific going into the city so keep that in mind in case to need to commute into city centre

JudyGemstone · 15/06/2021 21:57

None of those places are really in Bristol.
Whitchurch is not very nice, not sure about the others as not visited but they’re not Bristol.

Lunamoons · 15/06/2021 21:58

So we want to move to Bristol , but we are doing council house exchange and those 3 areas have said they would like my house but I don't know any of them well x

The commute question is important I think. Commute into Filton (MOD/UWE area) is a total nightmare. Pre COVID I did M4/M32 most days to the centre and whilst in the evening it took about 25 mins, in the morning i allow an hour and a half and have been known to literally cry with frustration. I once went the 'back way' through downend and fishponds and it took me two. It's 12 miles from my house........

South Glos is lovely (well my bit is). Come out a bit from the suburbs and it feels quite rural but easily accessible outside of rush hour. Schools I think generally a bit easier - my friends either have toddlers, adult kids or like me don't live in Bris proper but secondaries do seem to be an issue.

Plus house prices a bit lower a bit further out. Having had a mate who has been priced out of his normal bit of Bris within a few months, it sounds like a jungle out there.

funtimefrank · 15/06/2021 22:03

Just saw your update so ignore me :)

I looked in Mangotsfield and quite liked it if that helps :)

squirrel76 · 15/06/2021 22:04

Out of those 3 would probably go for Mangotsfield although Little Stoke is fine too, some parts not got much kerb appeal but otherwise no real problems. Lots of good primary schools in both areas, secondary schools can be a bit harder due to catchment areas but there are definitely options!

paddler78 · 15/06/2021 22:04

Mangotsfield definitely the better mentioned out of the three but many other local areas would be as good x

Logmein · 15/06/2021 22:11

I'd say Little Stoke, better commute that the others, easier access to motorways etc.
As others have said commute is bloody awful in Bristol, I've moved from Almondsbury to South Wales (30 miles away), I can get to work Bradley Stoke quicker than my colleague who comes from Whitchurch!
Although I wouldn't say that the schools in any of the areas are that good sorry.

Lunamoons · 15/06/2021 22:15

It would be near kings forest primary school if mangotsfield and little stoke primary

Kings oak secondary school
Anyone know if these are ok?

@JudyGemstone

None of those places are really in Bristol. Whitchurch is not very nice, not sure about the others as not visited but they’re not Bristol.
Mangotsfield and Little Stoke fall under South Gloucestershire for local government purposes however, each is certainly within east and north Bristol respectively (postcodes BS16 and BS32).
islamann · 15/06/2021 23:26

Little Stoke Primary is a good school, & the secondary choice would be Patchway or Abbeywood, both part of the same academy trust. Both have much improved over the last few years. Little Stoke is a lovely place to live, and part of "The Stokes", which comprises Little Stoke, Bradley Stoke &Stoke Gifford. Great parks, community areas and a fantastic community spirit.
Planning permission is in final stages of being granted for a concert arena on the old Filton airfield, so LS might have some noise issues on occasion in the future. However they've had a few trial concerts there, Massive Attack in 2019 for example and the noise wasn't massively intrusive and over by 10:30.
Traffic is fucking awful though. An accident on the M4, M5 or M32 can bring the whole area to total gridlock.

JudyGemstone · 16/06/2021 06:26

I know where they are and what the postcodes are, I just wouldn’t count them as being in Bristol itself. Would be a long old bus ride into the centre from either.

4amWitchingHour · 16/06/2021 07:59

They're all outskirts / suburbs of Bristol, it's being picky to say they're "not Bristol".

Anyway - of the three I'd go for Little Stoke OP, the transport connections are better with easy access to Bristol Parkway, you've got all the industries in Filton as well as buses into the centre. And although you're not right next to open countryside like with Whitchurch and Mangotsfield, there is a nice park, and the nature reserve in Bradley Stoke

Lunamoons · 16/06/2021 09:26

Thankyou everyone !
Think majority is mangotsfield :)

The Whitchurch house itself is probably the nicest and has a good garden but it's more important for good area to me :)

OP posts:
islamann · 01/07/2021 17:16

@Lunamoons did you make a decision yet?

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/07/2021 17:26

Have a look at Keynsham. It's technically in Bath and North East Somerset but only about 2 miles from the county boundaries with Bristol (it's a county as well as a city) and South Gloucestershire.

There's been talk for years of extending the ring road from Hicks Gate near Keynsham through Whitchurch. Whitchurch also has the A37 running into the city centre from the south. There's a lot of heavy lorries using that road.

Really, it all depends on where you will be working.
