Son's sunburned hands / driving test in the morning

Honestly, I despair. DS (18) went to the seaside today with his friends. Been out from 9am to 10pm. He has his driving test at 9.15am tomorrow.

I asked him to rearrange the trip to get some more practice in. No. Fine. He's well prepared and been driving for a year off and on, when allowed.

I told him to keep applying SPF. It seems he forgot to do his hands/wrists and the back of his neck (which I know is dangerous, and he knows to slather it on there).

His hands are red raw. They're going to be worse tomorrow aren't they. He's grumpy as hell. Clearly shattered. Probably dehydrated. I thought I had some aloe vera in the fridge but I don't.

He's taken some ibuprofen and gone off to bed.

DH says as painful as it is to watch he needs to learn the hard way. Not sure what else we can do, really.

But I'm wondering how tricky steering and changing gear is going to be tomorrow.

It'll be ok.

People don't burn on palms of the hands (skin is thicker) so grip won't really affected, unless the extent of bolstering on the back is so bad he needs medical attention for his burns.

It's a shame he had to find out the hard way. One of my DC burned badly as a teen (he was relying on me to nag him, and I hadn't as I thought one reminder at his age was enough) and he did learn from it

The nerves will probably overide all of that. He needs some decent stuff to put on though. Sunburn properly sucks.

NinnyNewName · 14/06/2021 23:13

When you say decent stuff, do you mean aloe vera @gamerchick?

If you have any Sudocreme in the house, put a good covering on his hands and neck tonight and it'll help take some of the burn down by the morning. Really worked well for DH when he was badly burnt last year. Wishing your DS good luck for tomorrow.

Symapthy from here. My DD1 went surfing yesterday on a rare day off. She surfs regularly (but usually in a wetsuit) ..wore her cossie... put factor 30 on...
And sent me a photo of her lava hot, flaming burnt thighs :(

She's a bloody doctor!!!! She's also blonde, fair skinned and knows better. I think she wore scrubs to work today just because they are loose and less painful....

Branleuse · 14/06/2021 23:33

Youll just have to see how it is in the morning. Ive never found anything that really works for sunburn except time

Nannyamc · 14/06/2021 23:37

Plain yogurt it will smell but will take the pain away

NinnyNewName · 14/06/2021 23:43

Thanks for the tips everyone. He's grumpy as hell and asleep. I'll see how he is in the morning. Showering's going to be interesting!

He's 18 and 18-year-olds might be foolish but they are also pretty hardy and best left to learn through experience. If he fails, he'll likely take things a bit more seriously next time so he can go in on top form. Most likely though adrenaline will take over and he won't notice his hands during the test.

In my early 20's I got awful forehead burn on holiday in Malta from not using suncream on an open-top bus. I looked like a right idiot and had to permanently wear a hat for the rest of the holiday, which also hurt from the burn. I never made that mistake twice!!

NinnyNewName · 14/06/2021 23:56

I agree @mouseholecat which is why I've not gone to the 24 hour supermarket for aloe vera. We will stop and get some tomorrow.

Thanks all. Goodnight. I'll let you know how tomorrow goes!

Bless him. I also burned myself this weekend agter falling asleep in the garden 🤦🏽‍♀️

Boots Soltan have an aftersun spray, really cooling and you don’t have to rub it it. £5 and its lovely. May be too late to the party though.
But good luck to him.

NinnyNewName · 15/06/2021 13:23

They weren't too bad this morning, surprisingly.

He failed. I think he was just really unlucky. I've told him all the best drivers pass second time Wink

Oh bad luck. My son passed second time :) Hope his hands aren't too painful.

MrsDThomas · 15/06/2021 15:20

Oh never mind. He will feel shite but at least he knows where he failed and he can work on it.

NinnyNewName · 15/06/2021 20:58

His hands are much better today, surprisingly.

Thank you for all the advice and good wishes.
