Sun cream stains on white school polo shirts argh!

Is there anything I can do to get rid of all the yellow stains on dc's school polo shirts?

I have washed them at 60 with powder and vanish, left them in the sun to bleach the stains, but it hasn't helped.

I think my only options at this stage are either throw them away (land presumably face the same problem with the new ones in a few weeks) or dye them the same colour as the school jumper (green) - or is there anything else I haven't thought of?

It’s nearly the end of term so I wouldn’t look to be throwing them out and replacing. Honestly no one notices at our school so I’d just continue to let dc wear them.
Long term you will be better finding a sun cream that doesn’t stain, I use calypso clear.

There is a product that gets rid of sunscreen stains on white fabric called HG whiter than white.

The Nivea for kids doesn't seem to leave the yellow stains (or at least nowhere near as badly).

Try actual bleach, dilution should be on the bottle.

Putting it in with the nappies tends to fix ours but they aren't that bad so far. Nappy wash: 1hr 40/60 wash with Ariel or bold (some detergents are much better than others) and a scoop or two of stain remover (generic) and then 2hr wash at 40

I pretreated mine with a thick paste of Morrison's whites stain removing powder (cheap vanish) and water for 10mins before washing with biological washing powder but regular mixed wash.
Our 5yo insists on doing his own sun cream so the shirts look like he's been bathing in the stuff, this week he even managed to combine it with marker pen so I was impressed when they came out white.

I’d just keep using them - they’ll only get yellowed again. If green is an option, next year I’d buy green ones, they’re available at eg Sainsbury’s in almost every colour of the rainbow.

Neat bleach doesn't even work. However I have found something that does - the Sticky Stuff remover, I think the brand is de-solve-it or something like that. Can get in Robert Dyas. You need the liquid not the spray. Pre-treat the stains and wash as usual. Gets all the yellow out, but it does have a peculiar smell, so need to air them for a day or so until it fades.

One way to try and minimise yellowing is to apply suncream before getting dressed and allow to dry into skin for at least 5 minutes before putting clothes on. Easier said than done of a school morning!

If you bleach them they’ll probably go bright pink. If you go that route you have to leave them in longer to then fade the pink out but then you run the risk of them going yellow 🙈

Personally having done this hoopla previously I would just use them until the end of term and then chuck ‘em in the rag bin for recycling.

Next time....do not wash until you have rubbed ordinary bar soap o. And left to soak for minimum of half an hour and scrubbed with nail brush.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/06/2021 11:23

Soap gets out marker pen too, as long as you do t wash it in the machine first.

If they are washed and this clean I would just keep using them. I am quite a keen presoaker eg cricket whites etc but if a personal +wash doesn't work I wouldn't consider replacement or dyeing.

Six more weeks then relegate them to rags and start again in September.
