What are summer born school leavers upto?

DS has finished school, post GCSEs. He is an August birthday (mid). He is only two weeks in and he's already bored to tears. Unfortunately his mates don't live locally and are in the year below anyway so still at school. Both DH and I work full-time. DH from home luckily so he's not on his own. He desperately wants a job but no-one will have him until he is 16. We live pretty rurally so the options are limited anyway.
If you have a summer born child in the same situation, what are they up to?

Friend's DS is a mid-August birthday and while a lot of places have said no to hiring him until 16, he's got a job working on the pot wash at a pub/hotel in town. So there ARE jobs out there for 15 year olds, just got to hunt them down...

BlibBlabBlob Thank you. He's applied for a few pub jobs but not heard anything. Not sure if it's our local authority but you can't work after 7pm if you're under 16 which rules out lots of jobs. We're in a small town where the day trade is not great for pubs. He has tried a couple of local cafes but they're not hiring.

I was a summer born child.
I was mainly just socialising with friends but I wanted a job. I started to hand out CV's when I was 15. Got hired by sports direct when I was 15 but didn't start until I was 16. I loved my little job. The days I was at college I'd just do the weekends 9-6/9-4 but in the holidays I was there pretty much everyday 9-7. I only got about £200-£300 a month which seemed like I was rich! Grin.

BlibBlabBlob · 15/06/2021 18:11

@PixieDust28 that's the exact problem - you can secure the job at 15, but not start until 16! Current Year 11 students have been cut loose for three whole months, which is great if they can work but a bit tricky if they turn 16 a week before returning to school. :-)

@Yellowbowlbanana maybe a local authority rule? There's nothing in national guidance, I believe, about finishing by 7pm if under 16.

If hes bored, would he do voluntary work? Going into primary schools to hear kids read. Charity shops won't have him on the tills, but perhaps sorting the stock that comes in. Any local animal shelters who might need someone. Local radio station?

Just get him to volunteer to fill some time and get something on his cv.

How would he feel about starting his own business? That would fill up his time nicely!

I was in that position and my DM sent me on a touch typing course to make me more employable. I wasn’t 100% amused as none of my friends were working but I’ve thanked her many times since watching how slowly many of my colleagues type!
