Bird identification

I have this bird running around my garden. It’s quite big and downy. It’s blackish in colour. Has a pointy beak and long legs. It’s runs fast and hides. I think it’s a chick - I’m live pretty rural opposite farm land on the edge of a small town.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Peacock? Will google peacock chicks.

Its a young coot or moorhen

ifIwerenotanandroid · 13/06/2021 15:11

Maybe not - they all look more fawnish colour, including the legs.

More likely moorhen unless you live close to a pond

Slub · 13/06/2021 15:12

Not a peacock chick doesn't have the head crest feathers and the beak looks wrong.

tenlittlecygnets · 13/06/2021 15:13

Moorhen. Are you close to water? Any sign of Mum?

Lessstressedhemum · 13/06/2021 15:17

Could it be an emu chick? Does it have markings? What sort of size is it?
If its beak has red on it, it might be a moorhen.

@Slub

Not a peacock chick doesn't have the head crest feathers and the beak looks wrong.
But the babies don't have a head crest & they can have that paleness around the eye. (I'm just googling & comparing - I don't know).

Thanks for your ideas I’ve been Googling various birds. I think it might be a moorhen chick. I’m just going to post it on a local Facebook page so the local wildlife experts can help. There’s a big mere just over a mile away but might be garden ponds nearer.

My guess would be moorhen.

Does look like an emu though (but they are black and white). Think other mentioned birds also have white on them.

It's cute whatever it actually is.

Zwellers · 13/06/2021 16:40

Looking at the feet I agree moorhen

tenlittlecygnets · 13/06/2021 16:47

Baby emus are striped. Also not native to the UK. Also much bigger than this chick.

You don't tend to get moorhen in garden ponds. The mums are usually very good - wonder what happened here? Please update us, op.

MustardRose · 13/06/2021 16:54

I'd say it's a juvenile coot. Moorhens tend to have more yellowy legs, and those look grey.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 13/06/2021 16:55

Moorhen chick! Their long legs and big feet are so cute stuck on a tiny ball of fluff!

Slub · 13/06/2021 18:57

Peacock chicks do indeed have tiny head crest feathers. They are super cute 🥰

Does it depend on their age?
