What food fills you up?

Currently breastfeeding and I'm starving all of the time! I've put so much weight on and feeling really shit about myself and need to do something about it.

What's your most filling snack or meal? I'm just eating crap all the time!

Eggs, cheese, meat, dairy, salads with plenty of dressing and protein... Thick soups with lentils etc.

Anything with white flour doesn't fill me up at all.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 12/06/2021 18:48

Protein with some veg and a little fat. Carbs bring out monster hunger in me so I avoid them except naturally occurring in veg. Almost like Keto but way more protein and less dietary fat.

Example is massive chicken salad with a couple of boiled eggs, olives, parmigiano and balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing.

Tempusfudgeit · 12/06/2021 18:49

Protein protein protein! Or do what I did and eat several packets of chocolate digestives a day 😀

Longdistance · 12/06/2021 18:50

Eggs for sure.
I do love avocado on toast with a poached egg on top. 😋

Bookworm19 · 12/06/2021 18:51

Fats and carbs, but that's just me. Stuff like peanut butter, nuts, cheese, homemade bread, full fat Greek yogurt, bananas, etc.

CurryLover55 · 12/06/2021 18:52

I noticed that if I have a decent breakfast eg bacon & eggs, I go right through until a reasonably late lunch & don’t need to snack.

StevieNix · 12/06/2021 18:53

Watermelon
Any type of protein - eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, yogurt, cold meats (I sometimes cook up chicken thighs or drumsticks with some sort of flavour/spice and keep them cold in the fridge)
I also like pickled onions and gherkins to snack on as they're low calorie but crunchy

Standrewsschool · 12/06/2021 18:53

Porridge and fry piut for breakfast. If I have other breakfasts, I need a mid-morning snack.

I agree with the above mentions of protein. If you have an Apple, have some cheese with it. The energy it gives you will last longer.

Standrewsschool · 12/06/2021 18:53

Fruit

PattyPan · 12/06/2021 19:17

I always find risotto and paella really filling as meals. I have a healthy appetite but I often struggle to finish them. Fruit for snacks.
Totally disagree with the protein thing. I did a low carb diet a few years ago where I was eating lots of eggs, fish, etc and never been so hungry in my life! I definitely need fibre to feel full.

drigon · 12/06/2021 19:20

I like sesame crispbread with peanut bitter and a slice of emmenthal cheese.

drigon · 12/06/2021 19:20

Butter!

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 12/06/2021 19:22

Tin of tuna, handful of olives, pickled gherkins, few salad leaves, sliced tomato, drizzle of chilli oil and a sliced hard boiled egg if you’re absolutely starving. Can go all day on that.

Thanks. Some useful suggestions here.

Anyone find drinking lots of water helpful?

Chicken salad is amazingly filling.

AdaColeman · 12/06/2021 21:09

Porridge for breakfast, plus plenty of fluids throughout the day.

When you get the chance, make up batches of nourishing snacks to store in the fridge, so you've always got a supply at hand, and don't have to eat biscuits or cake.
Think things like hard boiled eggs, cheese cubes, pots of hummus, etc. Or ask friends/family to bring them instead of flowers.

SwordPlay · 12/06/2021 21:10

WATER, 100% - fills you up and helps getting rid of confusion (am I hungry or just thirsty..?)

Personally, I also couldn't shake an excess post-baby weight for ages...I Then managed to drop a dress size within a couple of weeks by simply ensuring I drink loads of water.

Regarding filling meals and snacks - fats & protein are your friends and won't make you crave more (unlike most carbs). Eggs, almonds, avocado, walnuts, hummus are my go-tos. Hope that helps xx

Thecathouse · 12/06/2021 21:35

Breastfeeding a two year old here

The hunger is reminding you to keep your energy up so your milk production stays high. I had incredible thirst in the early days and still do. I drink three litres a day still but alternate with a splash of cordial and cups of decaf tea - you need the electrolytes too and water doesn't give those

Filling food - full fat Greek yoghurt with the fruit of your choice

Peanut butter on granary toast

Hard boiled eggs

Hummus with veg

Jacket potatoes with cheese and coleslaw

Porridge

Flapjacks

Cold tuna pasta with mayo

Peanuts - you can get flavoured ones too to mix it up a bit

Don't be tempted to cut out carbs, when breastfeeding you need those, just go for complex carbs instead of white bread / white pasta - swap them for wholemeal or granary, and if you fancy junk food - by all means allow yourself some

You need so much food and water when you are breastfeeding. I find that protein really fills me up. I drink alot of water and always have water with meals.

SimonJT · 13/06/2021 08:48
