Houses in books....where do you want to live ?

Just reading the thread about homes and somebody mentioned no food smells in the kitchen.
This made me think of Penelope Keeling's house in The Shellseekers.
She has a huge basement kitchen with French doors into the garden, there is a scrubbed pine table with a jug of flowers on it and a delicious smell of garlic and herbs. She has shelves full of books and lots of records and silk indian throws on the sofa and omg! I want to live there!

Which fictional house do you want to live in?

28 Barbary Lane! I have such a vivid picture of it in my mind's eye.

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Brideshead Castle - I would totally convert to Catholicism for that gorgeous gaff.

That's nothing! I want to live in Brambley Hedge, and I am totally willing to become a mouse to do so.

Oh yes. The kitchens in Brambly Hedge are to die for!

@sluj

Green Gables is where Enid Blyton lived and Kirrin Cottage is where George lived (near Kirrin Island). Both sounded perfect
Green Gables is from L.M. Montgomery's Anne books, not sure what you're thinking of :).

Undecided between Ingleside and Green Gables for me! Rainbow valley or the Haunted Woods...

Ooh so many!

The Burrow from Harry Potter would probably win though. Rustic and charming and higgle-de-piggly, with the addition of self washing dishes and self stirring saucepans? A hard combination to beat.

Might have to evict the ghoul in the attic though.

Alconleigh · 12/06/2021 18:42

Pretty much any house in most Jilly Cooper books. Most notably Rivals.

LadyPoison · 12/06/2021 18:46

Beckfoot - not too big and a perfect location

Atlantis from the seven sisters series. Or Mandalay before the fire. Any of the houses in Big little lies.
Oh yes, Atlantis! It sounds incredible.

Can I have Mallory Towers?

Jane Austen is supposed to have based Pemberley on Chatsworth which I've always felt was a bit of a mausoleum of a place. I think I quite fancy Netherfield Park - so long as Miss Bingley had moved out. Big enough to throw great parties in the ballroom but probably small enough not to get lost.

When I was little I wanted to live in Rupert Bear's house. It seemed so cosy and he had a plump eiderdown.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/06/2021 18:59

Green gables .
The Larkin's farmhouse.
The March family's home in the recent version of the film.
Cold comfort farm.
I thought of Rosamunde Pilchers houses too , and Jilly Coopers .

Misslethwaite Manor (The Secret Garden) it was my favourite book as a child and I’ve always wanted a secret garden.
Croft Manor from the original Tomb raider film (and the computer games 😀)

Neighbour Tease, which is Lord Merlin’s House in “The Pursuit of Love”

Central Heating, a library and multi-coloured pigeons!

“Mangling Done Here!”

redastherose · 12/06/2021 19:15

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel I would take out Amazon and head to the Island and Camp and take Mrs Blackett too so the horrible Great Aunt couldn't upset her!

sluj · 12/06/2021 19:15

So sorry, idiot me. I meant Green Hedges !!

Bobbyelvis4ever · 12/06/2021 19:24

Sept-Tours for me, complete with current vampire inhabitants so I could quiz Marthe and Ysabeau on all the things they’ve seen / lived through.
From the All Souls Trilogy

Good call. You probably already know but it’s based on Lord Berners’ house, Faringdon House, which also has a swimming pool with the changing room floor tiled with pennies.

TheresWaldo · 12/06/2021 19:29

I used to want to live up the Faraway Tree but I fear these days I'd find that quite terrifying.

MargaretThursday · 12/06/2021 19:33

@NotMiranda

So many of them!

Rumer Godden is great at houses - China Court in the novel of the same name comes to mind.

When small I was obsessed with Malcolm Saville's Green Dolphin Adventure, and wanted to live there. Some family friends who we often visited helpfully moved to an ex-inn (the Old Angel in Bury St Edmunds) which was full of little up and down stairs, wonky floors, etc - exactly right, though I never did find the secret smugglers' passage.

Trennels, so long as the heating and hot water were modernised, definitely, ditto the Cazelets' house. And a non-fictional one, but which is part of fiction: Asthall Manor, the middle one of the Mitfords' childhood Big Houses.

It's Gay Dolphin Adventure and it's thought the place he based it on was The Mermaid in Rye
HeronLanyon · 12/06/2021 19:37

Malo and Lucia. The house with the window looking over the street. (Also had the cupboard where mrs Mapp was discovered to have been stockpiling). Beautiful in real life and full of laughter from those books.
The house from Rebecca - mostly for the grounds and the bay.

Maireas · 12/06/2021 19:40

Yes, Lamb House which became Mallards in Mapp and Lucia! I always liked the sound of it when it became Mallards House after Lucia bought it and upgraded!
