Help me figure out how much this is worth

Hi MN.
I’ve got a bit of furniture I want to get rid of - it’s a roll-top writing desk that belonged to my ex’s grandad. We’ve had it in our house for 10 years and I’ve never really liked it. When we broke up last year he told me he didn’t want it and I could sell it and put the money in our son’s bank account.
Sounds good to me, but I have no idea how much to charge for it. It’s at least 20-30 years old and quite sturdy so I don’t want to undercharge for it but I also don’t want to be saddled with it forever because I ask too much.

Opinions?

Thanks in advance

I would put it on eBay. Maybe put a reserve price if you don’t want it going for a few pounds but I’ve no idea what a reasonable price would be.

TenThousandSpoons · 12/06/2021 10:15

Looking at sold bureaus on eBay they are only going for £15-30.

Howmuchis · 12/06/2021 10:17

@TenThousandSpoons I was thinking of selling it between 20 and 30 quid so that sounds about right- I just knew I’d kick myself if it was secretly worth more, unlikely as that is Grin

It’ll go for beans on eBay. I recently listed a piece of furniture that cost 3k 5 years ago. It’s in perfect condition and the highest offer was 45….

If you use Facebook, try your local buy and sell sites.

I'd say £50 as a starting point. You can always reduce after a couple of weeks if it doesn't sell.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 12/06/2021 10:34

I would say about £30.

Oldraver · 12/06/2021 10:58

I would put it up for £20 on Facebook but be prepared to struggle to give it away

As it's 30 years old and made of pine it won't be worth much I'm afraid

RosesAndHellebores · 12/06/2021 11:01

I think it's quite nice. Why don't you keep it for your ds to use when he goes to high school and needs a desk?

Because unfortunately that style aren't very good to use with a laptop or computer.
Bluntness100 · 12/06/2021 11:05

Yes these are not worth much, and as others said, you my struggle to give it away, try at thirty see if anyone is interested.

sometimescharlottesometimesnot · 12/06/2021 11:05

You should try and up cycle it!

LER83 · 12/06/2021 11:05

Absolute bargain if someone gets it for £30! If I had somewhere to put it i would love something like this!

NoSquirrels · 12/06/2021 11:09

Looks like relatively unremarkable pine - you won’t get loads for it so just look on anything you get e.g. £25-50 as a bonus because it’s the space you really want rather than the money.

dontgobaconmyheart · 12/06/2021 11:09

I think its quite nice personally but I wouldn't expect to get much for it, £25 tops. It isn't antique or particularly fashionable, looks quite cumbersome to collect etc so may be an issue for anyone without a van.

To be quite honest I would have told the ex it's his so he can collect it, clean it up, photograph it, arrange sale, deal with buyers etc (and time wasters) and put the money in his own sons bank account, rather than passing on the load.

If it doesn't sell OP, lots of charities collect used furniture for free, to sell on to raise funds, might be an option if you end up wanting it gone but can't sell.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/06/2021 11:42

@QuestionableMouse I take your point.

MustardRose · 12/06/2021 11:50

Agree with others who say around the £30 mark, you might be lucky and get up to £50-60 if someone really wants it and it's just what they are looking for.

If you just want to get rid, try the Salvation Army or have a look to see if there are any local furniture re-use places run by charities. They would probably be able to come and collect.
