New job taken a turn

I started a new job just under a year ago. Like the work, nice people, all positive.

Two months ago I got a new boss. He brought with a new team member who has just started with us. I worked with this team member before, he's a coaster, does minimal work, tells lies to makes himself look good, basically can be difficult to work with because you can't trust him.

I'm dreading work now. I'm going to be stuck with this bloke, we'll be sharing a small office so there's no escape.

I know that I need to suck it up, that he might have changed since I worked with him last, but as he has the ear of the boss, I'm a bit paranoid about what he's saying behind my back (like last time).

How can I cope with this so it doesn't ruin a job I was really enjoying?

I’d avoid any confrontation with the new guy if possible, just make sure all comms are documented (follow up any chats with an email confirmation, etc) so worst case you have some evidence if he tries to throw you under the bus. The new manager will eventually figure him out anyway you’d hope, and he may move team again soon fingers crossed!

I agree, document everything and leave a paper trail.

One thing I used to do when working with a tricky, non trustworthy character was to keep a diary. I used to make a brief record of any significant interactions, stuff to cover my own arse and details of their fuck ups in case anything ever came up. It sounds a bit paranoid, but it was good to have.
