Night owl or lark?

Just saw a thread about being a night owl of which I am not- I’m a lark. I like early nights and early mornings. I love being up while everyone else is still asleep. Sometimes I’m up 3-4 hours before everyone. I can get all my house work and laundry done, prep dinner, lay out breakfast ready for everyone, meal plan- do my online food shop before my husbands alarm has gone off. It massively takes the pressure off me during the day. If there’s not much housework to do I can watch a movie or read in peace and quiet.

So are you a night owl or a lark?

I'm a total night owl. I know I should go to bed but every night I'm not going to sleep till gone midnight and struggle to get up the next day. My dd is a lark but starting to become a night owl as doesn't like going to bed on time Grin

I firmly believe there's many an 'insomniac' who is really a night owl but has been brain washed by the larks to think they should go to bed at 9.30 and get up at 6am.

I also believe , like other areas of human behaviour that there is an evolutionary reason for this range of sleeping habits. Us night owls watched as the rest of the clan slept. we kept the fires going to ward off the sabre toothed tigers until the early morning when the larks would rise and we'd go to sleep. We kept the clan safe when all the rest slept. Prove me wrong! I get very annoyed when larks try the ol' 'your just lazy' accusation

I agree completely.

Many such people are doing jobs which require them to get up at 5 or 6 am, at which time their bodies are telling them they should be asleep, and go to bed at 9 or 10 pm at which point their bodies are telling them they should be wide awake. Result: ‘insomnia’, anxiety, depression, misery. If they were able to start work after 10 am, they would no longer have ‘insomnia’.

you tell me😁

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/06/2021 00:57

@DPotter

research on the variation of chronotypes giving humans an evolutionary advantage is nothing new and nobody is debating it.
nobody in the know would want to prove you wrong because it'd been their point of view already.
at ease soldier

Strongly agree

Im and owl and DH is a lark. To me the day should only contain one 8 o’clock ck, and two 1 o’clock s. To him, it is debatable that there are two 9 o’clocks.

I have often said to him that your Stone Age tribe would be dead without me and my kind pissing about until the early hours And we would be wiped out in an attack at 09:30 without him and his kind.

Ffs2020 · 12/06/2021 01:16

I'm a night owl by nature, but I'm burning the candle at the moment, so 8am is me looking bleary eyed for the teabags while everyone else has had breakfast, showered dressed, and started chores.

MargaretFraggle · 12/06/2021 01:18

Night owl Smile

But sometimes I don't think I am either...

Totally. I often feel a bit lark-shamed, but thankfully my children wouldn't let me go to bed at 9.30 anyway.

Susannahmoody · 12/06/2021 01:21

I'm a middling seagull or something. Pheasant maybe

Frownette · 12/06/2021 01:23

I'm an insomniac, owl. I like the idea of being hardwired to watch the tribe as they slept.

I've been up since 3am yesterday, got a headache and fever in the afternoon so can't rest.

MouseholeCat · 12/06/2021 01:27

Lark. I wake up at 6am on weekends just so I can go for a walk and sit out on our deck drinking coffee feeling all alone. My version of a lie-in is turning off the light at 8.30pm.

I get such bad anxiety when we go and see my husband's night owl family and they act like I'm going to bed early at 10pm. I've been meaning to invite them all on a 5am sunrise hike to see how well they manage.

It might seem like I'm posting this late but I'm 6 hours behind the UK feeling relaxed and ready for bed at 7.30pm!

Seeingadistance · 12/06/2021 02:02

Night owl reporting in!

Was so glad that my only child, now late teens, is also an owl. Couldn’t have coped with a little lark.

ElizabethTudor · 12/06/2021 02:06

Night owl. I’ve gone to bed a few times this week when it’s getting light and I love it. So quiet and still. I like going to bed when I know everyone else will soon be waking up.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 12/06/2021 02:52

Night owl as work nights and have a DC with autism that hardly sleeps. Luckily I can function on little sleep.

Night owl or lark?
Everyday21 · 12/06/2021 05:06

Lark here. Usually in bed but 9/930 at the latest and up at 5am. My husband is a farmer and by work is forced into the lark life but naturally hes an owl, he often needs to nap and will try and stay up later but you can tell his system is all messed up

I love a 5am run and chance to get a few bits done before anyone else wakes. I recently tried a run with a friend at 7PM and couldn't get to sleep until god knows what time and felt rubbish the next day. Definitely sticking to my natural rhythm

LJC1234 · 12/06/2021 05:24

I'm a lark! Especially in summer! Just enjoying a coffee and it's a gorgeous morning

ChessieFL · 12/06/2021 05:37

Another lark here and luckily DH is the same. I find I’m more productive in the mornings. The only downside is if I’m expected to go out in the evenings as I’m always knackered by 9pm!

DinosApple · 12/06/2021 05:40

Morning! Grin
As a teen I was definitely an owl, these days I'm a lark. I go to bed around 9-10 and wake up at 5 ish.

I do sleep longer in the winter though.

Sophiederuges · 12/06/2021 07:40

Lark.

For years I followed my DH’s owl habits and didn’t understand why I was always tired and unmotivated. Then we had DC and I discovered my lark side!

I love being a lark in the Spring/Summer, it’s cooler, the light is different. I love it in Autumn/Winter too: get started when it’s dark and witness the sun coming up.

Sophiederuges · 12/06/2021 07:41

Yes, it’s one annoying downside of being a lark. It’s hard to socialise in the evening because my body clock is so used to me going to bed at 9-10pm!
