Eat Them To Defeat Them

This is the campaign to get kids to eat more vegetables. But I don't get it. The whole premise is that vegetables are bad, the enemy. Confused

Are you familiar with this campaign? Has it helped persuade your kids to eat more vegetables? I'm just perplexed by the whole thing.

It makes no sense at all. It’s really stupid and potentially very counter productive.

Why would anyone eat anything dangerous or unpleasant that they fear.

Focussing on eating the rainbow, what fruit and veg can do for you - the multitude of vitamins, enjoyable textures and flavours, making you healthy and strong, supporting immunity - makes much more sense.

I’m sure they focus-grouped it like mad but it doesn’t work for me.

EnidPrunehat · 11/06/2021 13:47

My DGC think it is hilariously pointless. Eldest (10) couldn't see why you'd choose to eat your enemy when there are far better ways to kill them. Younger sister (7) said it wouldn't fool her into eating any more veg than she already does. Their review in one word - stupid.

MichelleScarn · 11/06/2021 13:49

4yo said so they're the baddies? I don't want to eat stuff that's bad for me...
Would love to know who the focus group was!

IsolaPribby · 11/06/2021 13:50

I am so glad I'm not the only one!

DD is in year 6 and school are currently taking part in the campaign. She is no fool and will likely think the same as me!

DS is loving it purely because he loves stickers. He will do anything for a sticker.

PurpleFadesToGreen · 11/06/2021 14:43

Try being the cook!

It got dumped on us!
And some of the suggested recipes...well, I've refused some of them.
Tomato soup muffin anyone?

Basically the kids want the stickers, couldn't give a monkeys about the veg.

GreyhoundG1rl · 11/06/2021 14:53

Dear God Confused. How did that nonsense get off the drawing board?!

Bibidy · 11/06/2021 15:26

Yeah I thought it was a bad advert when I first saw it too. My SC7 is difficult with vegetables and I know that she'd actually find that advert quite scary.

If anything it would have been better to make them cute and show them going around the body helping it to work better in ways that are interesting to kids...run faster, be stronger etc etc. Don't see the advantage in making them look gross and like the enemy.

CaptainBarbossa · 11/06/2021 15:56

As an adult this kind of made me smile. The advert was well done. For my ASD child it's confusing though. Things are either good or bad. This is confusing .

PanamaPattie · 11/06/2021 16:14

The people that created this advert clearly don’t know or have children.

JessieEssex · 11/06/2021 16:38

Agree, it's absolute nonsense. Both of my DDs (y6 and y3) said the same - why would we eat something that looks bad and scary? I am lucky that they both love fruit and veg and my DD2 thinks it's hilarious that she was given a sticker for eating half a cherry tomato. Joking aside it must have cost a fortune.

TinaHants · 02/04/2022 19:14

Hi

I agree, the eat them to defeat them campaign is portraying healthy fruit and veg as enemies. Moreover, the language is not something I want my children to be presented with, the whole "take them down" etc. plus the kids evil faces , the whole visuals are disturbing. I wonder how they will measure the success of the campaign. I have made a complaint directly to the campaign website and have contacted my preferred supermarket to let them know how I feel about them being part of it.

Heavymetaldetector · 02/04/2022 19:18

Thank christ. I thought it was just me who is a miserable stick in the mud. I don't get it, don't see the point, don't see how it helps anything. Son is SEN (awaiting diagnosis) so he eats what he eats and that's that, so I guess it's lost on us anyway. Meh.

Antarcticant · 02/04/2022 19:19

What a silly idea.

The focus should be on preparing/cooking vegetables in imaginative and appetising ways, so the children want to eat them.

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2022 19:20

Just had a look

Not sure what dc would think of it but the vegetables look pretty unappetising

Goldenphoenix · 02/04/2022 19:30

It's ridiculous, I wondered how the hell this was signed off and made. Did they speak to any parents about what they thought before launching it? Portraying vegetables as bad is a ridiculous way to try and get kids to eat more of them!

Cotswoldmama · 02/04/2022 19:30

I agree it's stupid and the adverts on TV always seem to be after 9pm!

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2022 19:31

It’s the same agency that got into trouble for the John Lewis advert

Maybe they need to shake up their creative team with more of an age range

TinaHants · 02/04/2022 19:37

I am planning to complain to the school , who have introduced it to us recently and are using it in school. They are reinforcing that kind of behaviour and language seen on advert and stickers and make it acceptable. I believe schools should have better standards.

Neongoddess · 02/04/2022 19:39

Its just not engaging for kids. I can't imagine any kids really eating loads of veg, Purley because of this advert.

Its been on and off for years. Its pointless.
