Severe swollen eyes hayfever reaction?

Hi

My dd has had severe reaction to pollen. Her eyes have practically swollen shut. No issues with breathing etc.
Chemist yesterday gave us eye drops and anti histamines. Her eyes have barely improved in over 12hrs.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Im wondering how long it takes for swelling to go down? And if I should take her somewhere?
Shes fine, not ill but looks horrific and can barely see.

I would ring 111 or the GP.

As pp 111 or GP, the eye drops have a build up effect so take 4 doses in course of a day if Optrex .....my ds likes a wet flannel folded and slightly frozen over his eyes

after a day of medicines there should have been a notable improvement.
agree with pp, call the gp.

hayfever seems to be awful this year. my dc take antihistamines tablets & cromaglicate eye drops atm.

With the drops, is she also using antihistamine tablets?

Mumdiva99 · 11/06/2021 10:44

Hi - you should see some reasonably quick results from taking both the tablets and the drops. - Me and my kids have all had bad eye reactions when we haven't medicated in time. However, if she was rubbing and rubbing the swelling might be bruising rather than allergy.

Has the itching stopped? Because it should have. If so use a cold flannel over the eyes to sooth them. If the itching hasn't stopped then go back to chemist or doctor.

We also use a soothing eye spray to supplement the antihistamine medicines. These can be bought in boots etc (they aren't cheap but do help).

Long term, can I suggest she tries not having dairy in the spring and summer? My DP used to have horrendous hayfever - his eyes would swell shut and stream all day. It was suggested he stop dairy in the spring and summer, and it works amazingly. He still takes antihistamines throughout, but he can function. In fact, he's only just taken his first antihistamine for the year.

This happened to me when I was a child. My mom was told to take me straight to a&e which she did. I was only about 8 so I can't remember they did but the swelling did come down. My mom was told to take me in because facial swelling can obviously turn dangerous. Not sure if this will be helpful or not though as this was a good 20 years ago! Confused
