Should skirts and dresses be phased out?

I just had this thought after reading this:www.itv.com/news/wales/2021-06-10/caerphilly-head-bans-pupils-from-wearing-skirts-after-complaints-over-length
I mean, lots of fashions are now gone- periwigs and ruff collars for men, bustles and corsets for women. We all wear more practical clothes.
Has the skirt and dress had their day? Is there any practical reason why they should be preferred over trousers?

The link is WRT schools.

Yes I understood all the words in the OP, thanks.

I love trousers, dresses are for dress-up occassions but DD lived in dresses for years and still prefers them in Summer unless we are outdoors for an activity.

I think it's nice not to have to adher to a strict fashion anymore, my mum was one of the first in her office job to wear trousers back in the Sixities and had to constantly field comments about it. Or having to wear a hat, only certain type of dresses/skirts etc. Give me a pair of jeans and I leave the dresses to DD.

In my opinion the head needs to take care of the problem with skirtlength or learn that a shorter skirt is not an insult to manly sensitivities. DD has a head who will hand out detentions for too short skirts and will put girls in trousers for a certain period for repeated offenders. It works. I would be miffed with a mandatory degree as I think girls (and boys) should have the right to choose a style which fits them best.

@Morgan12

No I love dresses and wear them 90% of the time.

Jeans however should fuck right off.

All of this. Dresses are so much more comfortable.
BogRollBOGOF · 11/06/2021 07:59

Dresses are cool in hot weather
They accomodate a range of figures and body changes better.

If someone offered me a job interview tomorrow, I could go to the wardrobe and pull out a classic smart dress. I wouldn't have to fret that my thighs are an inch bigger in my work trousers, or that the cut of trousers in style has changed.

Trousers should be avaliable to women too as they also have their benefits.

Dresses and skirts aren't going anywhere because they are practical.garments for many.

The archaic garments OP mentioned were impractical.adornments to show otf status which is why they fell out of favour never to be seen again after their decade/ century in bloom.

CutieBear · 11/06/2021 08:00

I hate trousers. I love dresses and skirts, but sometimes wear jeans. Skirts/dresses and shorts are more practical and comfortable for children (and adults) in the summer.

AprilAzpilicueta · 11/06/2021 08:15

I disagree with trousers as mandatory school uniform, they can be restrictive and uncomfortable for some body shapes. I loved school skirts.
A good compromise is the type at our local school - they wear a kilt-style skirt which is knee length and basically impossible to roll up.
I don't think uniform should be gendered though, I think any student who wants to should be able to wear shorts/ skirt/ trouser depending on their preference.

EverythingRuined · 11/06/2021 08:17

@TheQueef

Men. Phase them out.
That's a better plan. Skirts and dresses are so comfy and cool to wear
Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 11/06/2021 08:19

I only wear dresses as hate waistbands and just find dresses so much more comfortable. Happily go hiking etc in dresses, they never prevent me from doing anything I want to do.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 11/06/2021 08:20

Oh and they are wonderful in this hot weather.

notacooldad · 11/06/2021 08:32

This is a school uniform question, judging by the link
I've just re read the op.
I gomet the impression the school uniform issue got her train of thought thinking about whether dresses and skirts in general should be phased out, not just in schools.
Its still a no from me though.
I love my dresses!

Mandalay246 · 11/06/2021 08:33

I don't mind jeans or shorts, but hate any other trousers. Skirts and dresses are far more comfortable, and are cooler in summer.

RhymesWithOrange · 11/06/2021 08:51

A trousers only policy defaults to the male because boys generally don't wear skirts.

Why not have a skirts only rule?

ARealHoliday · 11/06/2021 08:52

In primary schools yes. Boys wear shorts and run and climb, girls wear skirts and are told to stop doing that to not show their knickers and learn gender differences and inequality early on

NotMeNoNo · 11/06/2021 08:55

To be fair even when I was at school there was a group of girls who would roll their skirts up really short in an intentionally revealing way. They will ignore any new uniform rules, it's a teenage thing. The school ends up trying to police skirt length with the result pupils who do basically follow the rules end up getting into trouble instead for the sake of half an inch of skirt length.

Minezatea · 11/06/2021 08:58

Women's trousers (inc those for older school girls) are made only for one pretty straight up and down shape. My neice struggles to be decent in trousers as they gape at the waist so much. If they started to make trousers for the array of women's body shapes then this might be more possible but whilst they're all modelled on people with very little waist it seems unlikely.

Nothingyet · 11/06/2021 08:59

@RickiTarr

I think OP is referring to schools and uniform regulations

No, I don’t think so - she was comparing them to periwigs, bustles and corsets, nine of which have ever been school uniform. She thinks we should do away with them generally.

Yeah, I had this idea skirts and dresses were kind of forced on women by men, over the centuries, for some reason, (quick access perhaps, lol). Men largely abandoned togas after classical times. And I also though trousers are more practical for most physical activities. I think school uniforms are good as they don't differentiate between wealth of parents so much (as a child I looked poor in school, I would have looked much more poor if not for uniforms).

But what, if like me, you like wearing dresses?

HerLadySheep · 11/06/2021 09:00

Oh blimey no, I have tree trunk thunder thighs and they are much better disguised under a dress than on display!
I can rarely get trousers to fit both my waist & legs

ABitOfAShitShow · 11/06/2021 09:02

Ridiculous idea. I love a dress.

Sparrowsong · 11/06/2021 09:04

No! I love dresses and skirts and barely wear trousers. I have an hourglass shape and trousers never fit/are uncomfortable.

Muddydoor · 11/06/2021 09:05

If I had been forced to wear trousers at school I would probably have stopped going.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/06/2021 09:09

I think standard primary uniform should be leggings/joggers/shorts with a t shirt and jumper. (with perhàps a dungeree option for those who struggle with waistbands) Not formal skirts and trousers.

Secondary girl uniform is always going to be tricky... As the girls themselves will change shape and what I loose on one will be skin tight on another. So really they need a range of garments in various fits to chose from.

Secondary girls.

Secondary girls shortening their skirts has always happened... My mum told me they did it at her boarding school in the sixties/seventies. My DDs find it amusing!

GoldenBlue · 11/06/2021 09:10

I disagree

I like dresses and skirts, I use them as my work 'uniform' almost all the time.

I do think that all school uniform should be unisex and perhaps should include trousers, skirts and shorts

pointythings · 11/06/2021 09:10

No, let's phase out uniforms and teach men not to be creeps.
