Where would you go for a child free holiday abroad in the first week of January?

Humour my optimism that travel will return…
As the title reads, where would you go in the first week of Jan for 4 nights abroad- first holiday out of the country without DC?
Had thought Iceland as it’s on both our wish lists but wonder if we want something more sedate than rushing around ticking off sights/multiple hotels when we could go in future with DC.
Had Prague booked pre pandemic but in March- but might be too cold? Inspire me please!

I'd be heading south at that time of year...... what about the Canaries ?

For a short break I wouldn't want much longer flight than that.

Hughbert · 10/06/2021 22:58

I would have said "any bloody where" until I read your OP! I'm not a fan of cold or Prague I'm afraid, so would go for neither of those, I'd be chasing sun. For a week in January not sure where really but probably South for me, north Africa, if that's warmish (with no FCO restrictions) or a Canary island. Not too far, as travel + jet lag is difficult in a week.

Malaga is lovely in January. Mild temperatures, amazing food, beautiful old town. That’s where I’d go.

NYC but I dont think dh would enjoy it.

Krakow is a brilliant little city to visit.

Extend the holiday and head to the Caribbean for a week of glorious sunshine. Or if you insist on liking the cold Wink Iceland is a great place to visit. We went in the summer tho so lots of light, pretty dark in January

Morocco is nice at that time of year

RubyFakeLips · 10/06/2021 23:05

Morocco or Seville if looking to go short haul

Cape Town or Rio if you’re prepared to travel further afield.

Abu Dhabi is nice around that time of year but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

In January I’d be looking to go somewhere warmer than here and 4 nights is definitely more or a city break. Stay in a hotel with a pool, ideally rooftop and you can mix sights with lovely meals and some pool time.

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2021 23:06

Iceland will be very cold and very dark in January.

Blowingagale · 10/06/2021 23:12

Are you wanting child free for yourself or also as regards the holiday? I think many people will holiday in their own country so if you want less children around generally check local school holidays.

Elpheba · 10/06/2021 23:29

Great ideas already, thank you. Definitely leaning towards short haul as 4 nights is the max.
Morocco is an excellent idea- wondering if I should look at Italy too as I’ve only been to the mountains once and never any cities.
@Blowingagale I don’t mind other children- just my own I’m keen to avoid!

Venice out of season is wonderful - not too cold, few tourists and you can see places. I have never been in the tourist season.

Elpheba · 11/06/2021 15:54

I did wonder about Venice but then thought it might be really chilly/damp given how far north it is?

Copenhagen or Budapest. Done both in January and they were cold but not unbearable. Totally different price ranges though. If you do Budapest, stay at the New York Palace. It was amazing and so reasonable.

I second Malaga, one of my favourite cities in the world - lots to see and do, and amazing food and wine.
