How do people store board games etc

I need to order new living room furniture after dumping the really cheap old Ikea book cases we have had for 15 years. But nothing seems to be big enough to fit all DS's board games and jigsaws. How do other people store the big boxed games?

I saw the following idea on Facebook, and it’s perfect! I ordered several A3 zip wallets and put the contents of each game inside a wallet, with instructions. I then recycled the boxes, and the space it freed up was amazing. I store all of them in a blanket box.

We store our daughters in those plastic underbed storage boxes. Do they need to be in the living room?

What about a chest of some sort?

Kulio · 10/06/2021 22:46

I have what I call the 'fun drawers'. Big chest of drawers in my front room and all board games stored in there.

Bin/recycle the ones they will grow out of soon. Buy something that will hold the longer term games. Things that have lasted for us have been the classics: Monopoly, Cluedo, chess, Backgammon, etc. The younger big plastic ones will be grown out of quickly

Thanks for the ideas. Taking some of them out of the boxes and putting them in bags will help. That and a small blanket box would probably work. He has just lost a load of storage in his room so thats not an option.

Ahh I see he has lost storage in his room, my dcs store boxed board games in their own bedrooms! I don’t want their crap taking up downstairs space permanently any longer Grin I’ve lived too many years with their crap down there, we did up their bedrooms, gave the 2 dds the loft conversion bedrooms etc at the understanding that their stuff now lives in their rooms (they are teens now, it’s not as harsh as it may sound! They do still have stuff all over the place obviously!) and ds who is 10 has one of the bigger bedrooms has more than enough storage in his room for all his toys and games.
Depends on how old your ds is, can you get rid of any that he has outgrown? I think the stage we’re at now with the games in ds’s room, he’ll probably end up keeping the majority of them for a few years yet.
Downsizing the collection is a good start though if you’re having storage issues.

We have some of those shelves that lean against the wall, the shelves are of varying depths. These are really good for games as the lower shelves fit the larger boxes. Small format games we put on their side in a lovely wooden box, so you can see all the edges. Some are stored on shelves on their sides like books which means more fit and again you can see them.

We've found since having them in the lounge they get played more as you notice them.

Sorry more ikea, but we have ours in a kallax shelf.

HoppSuisse · 11/06/2021 06:23

My brother has a lot of board games and he stores them longways like books on bookshelves. Its how a lot of the board game shops display them.

We have a playroom full of IKEA. A wall of Besta cupboards full of board games and toys face a wall of Svalnas shelves full of books.

DinosApple · 11/06/2021 06:28

We've got a wardrobe the last occupants left. I put most board games in that in the playroom.

The grown up ones are kept in the sideboard in the living room.

elQuintoConyo · 11/06/2021 06:29

Something like this:

It lives in DS' room, he has a huge built in wardrobe.

But I second getting rid of a lot, especially jigsaws. He's 10, hasn't made the Tiger Who Came For Tea jigsaws for about three years! We've passed a lot on.

Why did you get rid of storage in your DC room?! I'm the same as other PP. Last year we got loads of Kallax in their room to GET RID of all their crap toys cluttering up downstairs.

My entire house is done out in Ikea so I don't think I'll bother recommending any furniture for you.

TeenMinusTests · 11/06/2021 07:35

Don't get rid of the boxes! In a few years you can charity shop all the ones he has grown out of.
We keep some in dining room in the dresser, and others in an upstairs cupboard. But is is only for a few years and then you can slim down.

Where did you get them from please
redferrari · 11/06/2021 18:07

We use something like this www.dunelm.com/product/foldable-black-ottoman-1000111408.

caringcarer · 11/06/2021 18:31

We have a sideboard we keep in passage between hall and toilet. Have about 16 games in there and a few puzzles.
