Could anyone recommend a better contraceptive than the injection?

Had my 3rd depo injection at the beginning of the week and I've just realised that I've gone back to feeling low which in the past had been very unlike me and I think it's down to the depo provera. The time frame over the last 9 months would fit as well. I've never been very good at listening to my body but I'm sure it's responsible.

It's just struck me as over the last 2 weeks I was feeling really positive and feeling back to my old self possibly due to the fact it was getting less in my system and I'm gutted now I've got this again for the next 3 months.

Has anyone got better recommendations? I'm wondering whether I should now avoid hormonal based ones.

I found the implant and injection had the same effects. Combined pill wasn’t good either. The only thing I felt ok on was the mini pill cerazette

Thanks, I've heard good things about the copper coil so was thinking that might be a good option too?

I ended up seeing a specialist and they really encouraged me to try the Mirena coil after all the others didn’t suit. I just didn’t want to have one as we were planning to conceive in a couple of years at that point, so stuck with the mini pill

A coil is a good option.
There are ones with hormones in them (mirena the most common, but jaydess and kyleena lower dose versions). It's still the same type of hormone as the injection but a much lower dose. Some people are fine with that, even if they've had problems with the injection, some will still react. It's hard to predict.
The copper coil has no hormones and is really the only hormone-free long acting contraception. Best thing about it is it can last you 10 years! Periods can sometimes be heavier with it, but you don't get the risk of the erratic bleeding pattern you might with hormonal contraception.

Every single person reacts differently to every contraception so sadly it's personal experiment. I've heard great and terrible things about the copper coil.

Implant has been my best but does kill my sex drive. Everything else was worse thoug.

I'd love the Ballerine coil but you have to go private :(

Very happy with my copper coil.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 10/06/2021 21:56

Ive had the copper coil in the past and have a mirena coil now. Overall I like the copper coil best as mirena makes me.feel bloated

Nobranothanks · 10/06/2021 22:05

Having tried every hormonal contraceptive (except mirena) and had awful side effects every time, I can very much vouch for the copper coil! I'll take the heavy period over the mental instability any day of the week 😂

Trayble · 10/06/2021 22:08

Thanks for replies. Yes at this point I would welcome a heavy period. I've felt so awful these last few months and had put it down to lockdown/winter etc and thought my mood uplift was brought on by the start of the warm weather.
But I've plummeted back down to feeling so low I'm just sick at the thought of having to wait 3 months for this feeling to try and lift again.

Could your partner get a vasectomy?
