Tell me your best cystitis cures

AttaGirrrrl · 10/06/2021 20:52

I’m crying from what I think is cystitis. I know the basics from previous bouts: I’ve taken a dissolvable cystitis thing, taken paracetamol and currently have one hot water bottle on my stomach and one on the souls of my feet (random tip I read about that seems to stop the ‘urgent’ feeling). Can’t get cranberry juice as I’m home alone with DC.

Anyone got any more tips?

Thank you Flowers

This sounds disgusting but needs must! It can hurt less to pee while in the bath.
I’ve had some awful UTI’s in the past one of which I ended up being hospitalised with. I have always only got rid of it with antibiotics ASAP but the bath thing or pouring water over your bits while you sit on the loo can help while you wait for them to kick in.

YorkshireGirl35 · 10/06/2021 21:22

@ThePlantsitter beat me to it haha

PacifyLulu · 10/06/2021 21:22

I wasn’t meaning to have a go at you OP. Do take painkillers though. It will be better by the end of tomorrow - once you have antibiotics they work really quickly.

I've had medication given via superdrug online pharmacy and Lloyd's pharmacy online when I haven't been able to get a docs appt.

This might sound gross but the most soothing thing I found (when I had it really bad with blood in urine) is to just sit in a warm bath and let it drip out. It honestly helps the pain and sting. But as PP say, only AB really get rid of it. Yes keep drinking as it dilutes the urine. Hope you feel better soon. Horrid!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 10/06/2021 21:25

Water water water.

Wizzbangfizz · 10/06/2021 21:26

Superdrug do next day delivery, I keep a pack in now so I don't have to wait!

Luckyelephant1 · 10/06/2021 21:26

As others have said you need antibiotics.

But for the pain right now, take Ibuprofen rather than paracetamol. Ibuprofen will help with the inflammation, paracetamol is shite with UTIs.

Then drink a shit ton of water. Drinking warm water seems to get through the body quicker and so will flush things out more quickly to make it more bearable when you pee. Also a warm bath or shower and a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel between your legs helps. No sex or alcohol!

thewreckofthehesperus · 10/06/2021 21:27

Two soluble solpadeine in a pint of water always helps. Codeine is the only thing that'll touch that level of pain if you're that bad.

That and a hot water bottle is always my go to until i can get to a doc.

WhereTheWildlingsLive · 10/06/2021 21:28

Teaspoon bicarb in about 200ml water stops the pain within half an hour, then just gallons of water (occasionally with another bit of bicarb) until you can get to the drs for anti b's... The only thing that does it for me!

starfishmummy · 10/06/2021 21:35

There’s no blood in my urine

Do you have thendip sticks? Because blood in urine isnt necessarily the red stuff. It can be white blood cells in the urine which you can't actually see.

AttaGirrrrl · 10/06/2021 21:39

It’s okay @PacifyLulu - I knew you weren’t having a go. In normal circumstances I’d have also at anyone considering taking some old ABs. I’m sorry if I was snippy. Just sore!

I used to get UTIs a lot and the GP let me keep one lot of antibiotics at home so I could start them immediately, then I’d phone up for a repeat to have in stock again. If you different frequently it might be worth asking if you can do this.
Sending Cake though. I hope you get sorted soon.

AttaGirrrrl · 10/06/2021 21:45

Thank you all Flowers

My lovely DS has been in and out with cuddles and found me some ibuprofen so I’m feeling a bit better - not least as I know I’ve not scarred him with my sobbing.

I’ve managed to go downstairs and put the broth mix on to boil as I figured there’s nothing in it that will make me worse and I really CBA to separate the recommended barley from the lentils Grin

I’ll try bicarbonate just before I go to sleep. Don’t want to take it yet as I had one of the sachet things and I think it’s similar ingredients.

Looking online for D-Mannose and an online prescription now.

Thank you again.

If you have the burning sensation I found a warm flannel after peeing held on the vagina helped, also get antibiotics tomorrow!

AttaGirrrrl · 10/06/2021 21:47

Good point @starfishmummy - no dipsticks here. If I’m still bad tomorrow I’ll ask to be tested. Getting a GP appt is virtually impossible here but I think nurses are still doing same day face to face appts.

Uva ursi will get rid of infections and inflammation. I use the Vogel brand. Most people aren't aware of this.

crochetcrazy1978 · 10/06/2021 22:18

Antibiotics is the best thing. I have recurrent uti's and it's awful. I find d mannose helpful too. You can take a lower daily dose then large doses if you feel you have a uti. Hope you're better soon, they are so awful and are up there with tooth pain for me

NiceGerbil · 10/06/2021 22:19

I always use cystoleve which is the best soluble one I've found.

Sitting in bath does help a lot if you're at crying point.

Mumnets · 10/06/2021 22:22

If the powders haven’t worked, I think you need antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon. A UTI can quickly become a kidney infection, which is excruciating (I’ve needed IV antibiotics a few times over the years when home remedies didn’t work!)

LizzieSiddal · 10/06/2021 22:22

Ibropopen is really good for the pain, better than paracetamol ime.

Also a warm bath or shower is helpful.

TonTonMacoute · 10/06/2021 22:25

Drink water, lots of it. Keep drinking until you think you will throw up if you have another sip. Then drink some more.

I used to drink a pint every 20 minutes. It's hell at first because it hurts so much when you wee, but you just have to keep at it for several hours and you can't feel any twinges.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/06/2021 22:28

Are you in the UK? If so, you can ring 111 and get an out of hours GP appointment.

freshflowers2 · 10/06/2021 22:28

I would hugely recommend D-Mannose. Recommended by a consultant Urologist and I've never looked back Smile
