Nerve blocks for neck and shoulders anyone?

Have any of you had a nerve block for arthritis in the neck or for shoulder tendonitis? My consultant has recommended both (not to be done at the same time though ) but the neck one especially is scaring me. If you have had one or know about them are they painful afterwards ? What do you feel afterwards - do they make you feel numb like a local anaesthetic at the dentist does? Do they hurt at the time? I have an exceptionally low pain threshold.

I haven't had one but would also be interested in hearing from people who have. I have arthritis in my neck and some days it's so painful I want to cry and it then buggers up my shoulders and I get a headache as I'm so tensed up. I've got a pinched nerve on the right too so really need something other than just keep taking painkillers

Ouch! No personal experience but I did take a patient of mine down to theatre once and watched the surgeon do a neck nerve block and it looked awful!! The patient was quite a big bloke so I would’ve thought he’d have a higher pain threshold.
I took him back to the ward post-op and he only started complaining of pain once it wore off so we topped him off with oral analgesia.

DoodleLovin. Oh good grief that sounds like something out of a medieval torture chamber.

CouncilWorker. I get headaches that go from the base of my neck, up the back of my head, over the top and down into one eye. They’re not agonising but just gnaw away and make me feel foggy headed and exhausted. The consultant said the nerve block should help those symptoms. I’m just scared of it being agony or it going wrong and ending up with a paralysed arm or something.

i havent had one FOR my neck but ive had one IN my neck if that makes a difference and i was sedated to have mine done. it didnt hurt when i came round and i had a little soreness afterwards but nothing codiene and paracetamol couldnt take care of. I have CRPS and it was to treat that.

I hope it helped OneNightTime. My DM had CRPS after surgery on her shattered wrist . Even the slighted touch was agony. It sounds excruciating:(. Nothing was said at my appointment about sedation just that it’s done as a day case. I’d be much happier if I was sedated. I hate knowing what’s going on .

I had a root nerve block last October for a trapped nerve due to C5/6 disc problems, shoulder and arm pain . It was slightly uncomfortable when the needle went in but apart from that helped immensely.

I had a nerve block just behind each ear for severe headaches. It was fine. Had a local anaesthetic before the blocks. The worst bit was hearing the injections as could hear the liquid going in. Neck was very stiff for a couple of days but otherwise fine.

natchteule i dont know if they opted to sedate me becaus ei was quite young, only 17, im not sure if that made a difference to that decision about sedation. I definitely dont think i could have it done without it though
