Pedestal mats??

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 10/06/2021 16:38

Went to IKEA yesterday with a friend and almost bought a bath mat, then didn't because I couldn't find a matching pedestal mat. My friend was surprised and said they're really old fashioned! (and she thought they were disgusting because "boys drip"). I have always had one, as I like warm feet while I sit on the toilet!

Who's right here??

I can't stand them but I've noticed most people use them.

RozHuntleysStump · 10/06/2021 16:42

🤢

ItsSnowJokes · 10/06/2021 16:44

Your friend is right. They are grim.

itwa · 10/06/2021 16:48

Haven't seen one for ages Smile

Winkywonkydonkey · 10/06/2021 16:50

We don't have one but surely they are more hygienic if washed at a good temperature because the pee is caught in the mat, not seeping into your grout or running under your sink unit?

I'd say it's the way forward to stop rogue pee.

Nicolastuffedone · 10/06/2021 16:50

Never seen or used a pedestal mat in years. My friend has a carpeted bathroom though 🙈

Dilbertian · 10/06/2021 16:53

Pedestal mats are only grim if they aren't washed frequently. Just like bathmats, pedestal mats should be washed as often and as hot as towels.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 10/06/2021 16:57

Ours probably gets washed once every 10 days ish... But it's only two adults and a baby in a house with 2 loos so it doesn't get heavy use.

@Nicolastuffedone my parents had a carpeted bathroom for years, I'm with you on that one 😕

What?! Is this the 1970s? 😄

Pedestal mats are grimmer than boiled mince and cabbage.

Etinox · 17/06/2021 14:57

Oh my, I’d missed the cold feet connection. 💡

I wouldn’t dream of having a pedestal mat but I often put my feet on clothes if I’m on the loo on the way to bed or even on a towel.Blush

She is totally right.
Even in a household with no men and in a bathroom not used by visitors I wouldn’t have one - they look odd and dirty, no matter, I think.
Can you wear socks or bathroom slippers for loo trips - is your loo stone floored ?

HeronLanyon · 17/06/2021 15:06

I think I’m confused even as to what one is - can you have them by loo and sink ? Dirty either place. IMO.

BiBabbles · 17/06/2021 15:24

I don't think it's a matter of right, though I noticed when shopping recently that there were only a few of them compared to the many bathmats.

I know some who use them because they're in rentals with cheap lino and worried about staining around the loo, another who bought a house with a carpet toilet and added a pedestal mat as worried about the carpet getting manky/smell/grim before they can do up the place, and others just like them for warmth and such.

I saw these clear wipe-clean ones while considering for my bathroom, they seem a good idea if not liking the look but want extra protection on the floor and likely a bit warmer than some floors, though seem to be out of stock everywhere.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 17/06/2021 15:32

I have one, no boys here only girls so no mis-aiming. I wash it every 7 days on hot temp, hygienic enough in my opinion and feels lovely and warm in winter compared with the stone tile underneath.

frogswimming · 17/06/2021 15:36

Really old fashioned. Do you like avocado bathroom suites too?

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 19/06/2021 13:38

Hahaha @frogswimming no! I'm only 30 so not that old!
We've just always had one! I had no idea people thought it was so grim!
I have no intention of getting rid of it, though I might make more effort to wash it more often!

I thought they were grim and never had one but I have boys and one with SEN who isnt getting his toileting quite right. Basically i kept standing in puddles and although in principle its easy to wipe a hard floor PP is correct that it soaks into grout and stains sealer and can get under things and stinks. I bought a few mats. No more puddles and staining and less smell as i just wash them hot every other day. Its been less grim for me having mats so my opinion has changed.

Thumbcat · 19/06/2021 13:56

I've not seen one in anyone's bathroom for years. I associate them with my childhood and I'm 44.
