The Scillonian Scilly Isles

We’re going camping in Cornwall in July and would really like to visit St Mary’s Scilly. The ferry is only £30 for a day trip but reading about the trip sea sickness is mentioned all the time! Has anyone experienced this or taken a trip in the summer months when hopefully weather should be better.

@Powerplant

Thank you for all your tales of good but mostly bad experiences - I wondered why it was so cheap! We’ve we, I have, decided to fly over in the future to camp and explore the other islands. It’s on my bucket list 😊
To be fair if the weather is bad on your chosen day they'll issue an advisory & won't take passengers.

I’ve taken the Scillonian many times (Cornish born) and I don’t think I’ve ever not felt sick on it. My friend grew up on the IOS and won’t set foot on it.

Hmm, it's known locally as the stomach pump, but I've never had an issue on it.

It's generally worse on the way out because of the swell so if you're OK on the way out, then the odds are you'll be fine on the way back

Yes, you have to walk with waves, walk as the boat rises, hold on and stop as it drops and walk again.

Even the dogs sitting by me outside were sick!

I'd never do it for a short trip. We went for a very beautiful fortnight and the sickness was worth that!

For those suggesting going by helicopter from Penzance, what’s it like?! I don’t exactly love flying and have never been on a helicopter before, is it nerve wracking or enjoyable?!

Port1aCastis · 20/06/2022 14:15

OP the Skybus from lands end is a better experience and takes around 20-30 mins

I've got friends who go for 3 ish weeks every year and have been for over 40 years. Apparently the boat is horrendous and takes approx 3 hours. By the time you get there you will have 3 -4 hours max which isn't long at all. Some of my friends now fly from Lands End on a plane and takes literally 20 mins. You have to put your luggage on the scillionaon though and collect when it arrives.

I hate flying, but am weirdly ok with the helicopter - it is super quick. Definitely go into Tresco though, you then have the gardens, and fabulous beaches right there. St Mary's is nice - but not the wow factor if the off islands

@C1239 I went over on the old helecopter 20 years ago and I remember it being very loud to the point where you couldn't have a conversation but also very quick and over before you know it.

I went last year and absolutely loved it! I'm not a great one for flying generally but it was so much fun! The most amazing clear views and it was very smooth. Over and done with in 20 minutes too!

Even my old boss, who is west Cornwall born and bred, and spent 20 years in the navy, doesn't take to the Scillonian!

THAT is saying something. {Zombie thread, but the sea states will still be the same}
I recently saw a few horrendous pics of the Scillonian III ferry and googled..she looks like a paper boat upon a pond- pitching and rolling in the slightest breeze- there a[re other old rocky ferries who are infamous- Princess Maude {Ireland} Falaise {France and Guernsey} and Princess Victoria {Who tragically foundered with no women or children surviving}
