John Lewis refused refund can I do anything?

I made an expensive mistake today. I bought a chrome book from John Lewis rather than a laptop. Yes I know it was a stupid mistake to make and I should have checked what I was buying. I also know refunds are not guaranteed unless faulty which is why I bought from John Lewis, I thought they were meant to be customer service oriented.

DS opened the box up (he’s 13) but didn’t take it out the box & certainly didn’t use it.
Tried to return it 6 hours after buying but was refused refund, exchange or credit note as box had been opened.

I do understand it was opened and I am furious with DS but the return conditions online say John Lewis will refund if item has been “inspected” as long as it hasn’t been used.

I’m really upset. £270 is a lot of money for me to lose.

I spoke to the duty manager who was very nice and very understanding, he kept saying “I understand it hasn’t been used” but just kept repeating there was nothing they could do.

Is it worth persevering with or should I just accept it was an expensive mistake?

What are you going to use it for, won't a chrome book be enough?

GellerYeller · 08/06/2021 21:18

@Lettuceforlunch exactly the same here. Broke on Christmas day straight put of the box, they replaced it. same thing broke again 18 months later-still in warranty- plus the display stopped working, all in Normal use. JL online collected it for inspection, said it was damaged through misuse then kept trying to extract a fee of nearly half the value of it for repair. I negotiated that it was not lasting a reasonable or expected lifespan and they kept calling me at work chasing their fee. Then they returned it marked 'quote refused'. It was £600 and needed for home schooling. I'm livid.

@GellerYeller - same here!! They wanted £150 for a damaged part that we didn’t damaged and we also got the repair refused stuff. I really do hope a journalist somewhere is reading this one...

why can't you use the Chromebook? bought one recently as a laptop replacement and have found no real difference in performance from a standard laptop, only that it uses cloud storage.

Have to say love people saying the customer service is rubbish purely because they didn't get the outcome they wanted. Would you be happy to be given an open and potentially used item as new ? Don;t really think so.

GellerYeller · 08/06/2021 21:54

@Lettuceforlunch perhaps the Daily Mail will be along in a minute to make this an article!

A Chromebook IS a laptop, it's just got a different OS.

Is there a reason why you can't use the Chromebook?

callmemaybee · 08/06/2021 22:35

I always thought chromebooks were more limited in capability than windows/Mac OS/Linux? You can essentially browse the web but you don’t have the full suite of features you get elsewhere

Although probs not necessary for a 13 year old (if it’s for him)

Dizzybrunette445 · 08/06/2021 22:44

Call and say it's faulty lol

Londonmummy66 · 08/06/2021 23:09

In store you have the option to check and test the item before purchase.

Not at JL you don't - you get a chance to look at a product on the display which may or may not deal with your questions. However you cannot look at the actual product you are purchasing until you've paid for it - and then if you return it with an opened box you cannt have your money back. It's like being shown a size 14 skirt when you are a size 10 and then being refused your money back when you try to return the size 10 on the ground that you tried it on to see if the correct size actually fitted you or not.

You know they will check and test the fault though?
mooonstone · 08/06/2021 23:16

@Londonmummy66 that’s not the same at all! The equivalent would be being shown a size 10 display skirt and then being given a size 10 skirt to purchase. Your argument doesn’t work

You can run Linux apps on Chromebooks now plus a lot of Android apps, and a £270 Windows laptop is going to be terrible compared to a £270 Chromebook.

There is stuff you're not going to be able to do if you need specific software that's only available on Windows/Mac OS, but a lot of that probably isn't going to work well on a budget laptop anyway.

I had a faulty iPod bought in store at JL which I tried to return within a week, was told it would be sent off to be repaired! Complained to manager and eventually it was replaced but was there for ages for something very straightforward.

2 weeks ago bought a really expensive set of bedding online, 2 pillow cases, fitted sheet and was sent the wrong sized duvet case (their error). It took 3 phone calls to sort out while they 'opened a case'!!

Thanks @cupsofcoffee that's good to know
