Pre-selected bundles of shelves decorations?

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 08/06/2021 12:32

I’m not great at decorating / interior design.
I have lots of shelves I need to decorate, I don’t really have strong ideas in terms of styling and colors, just something that looks modern and polished.
Is there a website where you can browse « finished looks» and then buy the whole set to re-create the look? Or pre-selection of bundles of objects that would go well together?
(if not it would be a great business idea!)

I can see myself spending hours online, spending a fortune and ending up with something not that great looking :(

Any tips welcome!

Books.
Ones you've read and can talk about.

I have a wall of shelves in my living room. Things I keep there: books, DVD’s, board games, magazines, few ornaments, few boxes that keep some not so pretty to display ornaments.

What would you like to see on your shelves, op?

NeedWineNow · 08/06/2021 14:33

We've got this in our living room. The vase is from our favourite Greek island, the elephant and tea light holder on the top are sentimental items from late SiL and my late friend, and the silver tea light holders were just picked up in Dunelm and fitted the colour scheme. I swap things around occasionally and change everything at Christmas and wind lights around the shelves. Is that the sort of thing you mean?

We have books at the moment, and CDs... we love them but they don’t look nice.
This is the type of things I am looking for (if the attachment works!)
But I’d like to find somewhere where you can buy the whole look instead of having to source each object one by one. Basically someone else has already paired all the objects together and sells them as a bundle.

@kavalkada yes we have similar, but I doesn’t look very nice, just ok. I am not very good at interior design I guess.

@NeedWineNow yours looks nice! I want something similar but ready to buy, if you see what I mean.

I can’t imagine that this is not something that exists on the market, but maybe not...

The point of shelves is to display things you like though. It's not about interior design.

Whosaidit · 08/06/2021 16:58

Don’t you have any Knick knacks, vases, frames, anything that’s yours that you love and maybe even has memories?
I don’t really like the idea of a load of ornaments bought together already styled

Lou573 · 08/06/2021 17:03

But you need some framed photos OP, and they wouldn’t be yours! Start with some photos in frames. Prop up a nice framed picture maybe. Add a stack of books, some plants in nice pots. Then add in some bits and pieces - a candle, souvenirs from travelling, vase, nice stone/shell, handmade bowl.

HavelockVetinari · 08/06/2021 17:05

I know what you mean, OP. What's your colour scheme, and how modern/old is your home and other furnishings?

Etinox · 08/06/2021 17:08

Upload pics of a few things you have already and we can suggest complementary bits and bobs.
The am so jealous of you having this problem!

Feedingthebirds1 · 08/06/2021 17:11

For £250 a home stylist will take you round London to help you choose and buy the sort of individual items to create your look.

Expensive but I bet it would be fun!

Matalan has quite a large selection of knickknacks - probably not arranged in sets as such, but you could look at everything in one place (in store, not on website) and see which bits appeal to you.

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 08/06/2021 17:13

I have pictures there already, I guess that is a start. It is more with all the nice objects to put around them that I struggle.
I do have nice candles, vases but enough for 3-4 shelves, I need way more. First world problem, I know 🤷🏼‍♀️.

The point of shelves is to display things you like though. It's not about interior design I don’t disagree with you, in theory, but practically DH and I are not great at spotting a nice object and visualize how it would fit into our home decor. So we end up with a collection of practical but not especially nice objects, mismatched in terms of style and colour... I want some interior design and then I’ll add the few sentimental items I have to make it ours.

@HavelockVetinari I am quite flexible on style, modern but not too extreme, not too may objects. I like Scandi as well.
In terms of colours, neutral white/grey/beige or even black. Maybe some light blue, duck egg or turquoise. Pink but not too much / too bright. Silver rather than gold.
Sory that is quite vague, I know!
I do like most looks I see on Pinterest, the one I posted above for example.

I am looking for "home staging kits" but my internet is super slow. Have a look too, you might get further than me... (spinny wheel)

This sounds promising! £250 for the service would be ok, I would worry about the total price for the items they’ll propose but I’ll look into it!

I’ll have a look at Matalan as well. I don’t know the brand (I’m not British), I thought it was quite low quality but is it ok in terms of quality, ie doesn’t look too cheap?

Ok so maybe I just need to find a store where there is a good range and select pieces from there.
Is Next any good for this? I just had an ad pop up.

Can you remove the bookshelves? If the contents aren't going to be meaningful to you and you don't need the shelving then a nicely painted bare wall would be very nice!

Lou573 · 08/06/2021 17:41

Have a look at coxandcox OP, they have some nice decorative items. Also West Elm sometimes.

00100001 · 08/06/2021 17:42

O can't do that kind of thing to save my life.

I'd buy all the stuff in the photo, out it in the same places and it would just look like I'd plonked them there it wouldn't look finished... Confused

Peridot1 · 08/06/2021 17:46

If you already have some bits and pieces maybe get them all out and put them on a table and move them around in groups to see what goes well in terms of colour. Then number - I think the general rule is groups of 3 or 5 rather than even numbers. And then work on shape. So a group of three items would be tied by colour for instance. And you would have a small, medium and slightly larger or taller item.

Look on Pinterest and find images you like and see if you already have some things you can use. Then you might just need to buy a few things to add in. And you can use books. Group them by colour.

I have a book called Shelfie that I bought that I haven’t actually look at yet but I know it gives some ideas. You might be able to find that on Amazon.

IliveonCoffee · 08/06/2021 18:20

I'm a bit shit at this. But I think part of it, is buying things in dribs and drabs. So I have a muddle of ornaments in mismatched styles, all kind of put in the same place.

The main barriers to my dream style are probably cluttering and lack of co-ordination.

I'd pick a theme, go out with the view of getting everything at once, all matching. Lots of shops, the range, next, b&m tend to organise by theme - so all their rose gold geo stuff is in one place, seaside/sailor bathroom in another. Things like photo frames and plant pots, you can have 2/3 exactly the same (with a different plant or picture in)

Don't put too much in one place, allow space between items - your picture literally has 3...4 items max per shelf.

Lastly, I suppose is then avoiding extras creeping into the shelves. A letter here, pens, a book. As much as I have dreams for beautiful decor...shelving would eventually be used as a shelf...not a display cabinet. Ultimately, I suppose that's it - if you can pick a style you buy everything all at once, that you like and matches the style to create a display, rather than having shelving that grows organically with ornaments and trinkets.
