Things you 'ought to' like but subsequently gave up?

Do you ever realise that you are not really enjoying an activity, and that really it conforms to an idea of the sort of person you think you 'should' be, or aspire to be? Do you give it up with relief or sadness, or a combination of both?

Just a small example - I subscribe to a lot of magazines, it's one of my luxuries in life. The other day I cancelled two of them, admitting to myself that I don't really enjoy reading them, but somehow I feel like I should be the kind of person that enjoys them. I suppose we all have a self-image we cultivate, silly as it sounds.

So, just out of idle curiosity - what have you given up on that never really suited you? A hobby, a role, maybe even a whole way of life?

FourTurnings, does it feel better to get all that off your chest? Grin

@Faircastle

Going to the theatre / watching plays (almost always underwhelming; I prefer reading a novel).

Musical theatre (I think I stopped enjoying this in my early twenties, to be honest).

Attending classical music concerts (I still like listening to the music, but it's rarely worth the faff of travelling, and you have to sit still for a long time).

Going to the beach. An hour or more of preparation, travelling and setting up. A few minutes of enjoying the sea air before I get fed up and crave a shower, clean clothes, shade and quiet.

Going camping. I like to think of myself as the sort of person who enjoys it, but the reality is hard work and discomfort.

I agree with all of those.

Alcohol
Late nights

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 08/06/2021 21:16

Alcohol. I like the flavours, but there's this nasty depressive chemical included.

DipSwimSwoosh · 09/06/2021 00:05

Pets - I really am not a fan of animals in houses. Outside and far from me, fine. Smelly, hairy, dirty, confined... no thanks. I do not want to stroke your cat/ dog/ guinea pig/ whatever.
Space - no interest. Rocks in the sky.
Fossils - boring bits of old rock.
David Attenborough
I'm sorry, I realise most people like the first and last on my list a lot.

Gilead · 09/06/2021 03:47

Alcohol. Honestly just didn’t like it and nice red wine didn’t make me any more sophisticated than my preferred Elderflower fizz.

Chunkymenrock · 09/06/2021 03:56

Going for bloody walks.

virginfannyornaments · 09/06/2021 04:01

Wine

Fifthtimelucky · 09/06/2021 06:43

Tea, herbal tea and coffee
Alcohol
Olives

Jazz

Book clubs - to be fair I've never tried one. Lots of people have invited me, as I love reading, but I really don't want to have to discuss what I think of a book with other people.

However, unlike some others here, I do love my NT membership, sitting on beaches and reading classic novels. I find Shakespeare much more enjoyable to watch than to read.

FruityPolos · 09/06/2021 06:55

In my late teens I tried to like heels, clubbing, pubs and alcohol. Gave all that up by my early 20s and much happier for it.

More recently given up on finishing books or TV series I have lost interest in - it's not worth it if there's something else I am actually looking forward to watching / reading. Also given up spending too much on birthday cards and gift wrap etc - I love stationery and yes the stuff in Paperchase is still fantastic, but my finances dictate we are now a strict Card Factory household.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 09/06/2021 07:00

Cars, I own one and drive one but other than choosing one based on my needs I don't care about any specifications or to compare or show off. I never wash it myself either a £2 automatic car wash is fine I will Hoover it 3/4 times a year. That's it

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/06/2021 07:01

Camping
Festivals

GeorgeandHarold66 · 09/06/2021 07:12

Partying, crowded bars, drinking hard, getting all dressed up and going "out, out".
I swear I was born aged about 80 as I enjoy quiet beer gardens, proper conversation and pottering about quietly at home.

Oh and romantic relationships, I just don't get that "drive" to be part of a couple.

Arrowheart · 09/06/2021 07:21

Olives
Cheese
Being 'busy busy busy'
Large social groups
The beach
Swimming
