Do you assume all leaves in supermarket packets are edible?

Salad, spinach etc when there are leaves which look different, are you suspicious or do you eat the lot?

IF it's a bag of mixed leaves, I never thought to check. I just assume they're all edible.

I might look a bit more closely if I noticed one different leaf in a bag of a single type of leaf. But it's not something I'm actively searching for.

IsolaPribby · 08/06/2021 10:33

I do make the assumption, perhaps somewhat hopefully, that if it is labelled as salad leaves, it should be OK to eat.

LostInTime · 08/06/2021 10:33

They've been washed, put in a packet, and sold as food...so yes!
Confused

You think some aren't edible?

1n5piration · 08/06/2021 10:36

I don’t know! I bought a bag of spinach. To me spinach is the big green one on the right. There are loads of the multi-leaf stalks - really young spinach? But also lots of the yellow leaves which are totally the wrong shape and a couple of the wavy leaves Confused

I assume they are edible if they are in a salad bag yes

Notgoingtobefatformuchlonger · 08/06/2021 10:39

The long ones are pea shoots (looks like watercress but isn't!) the wiggly one is rocket. The big one is spinich and I'm unsure on the small yellow ones.

Seeline · 08/06/2021 10:40

We used to grow spinach when I was a kid - I really don't remember it looking anything like the leaf stalks there. Looks more like pond weed!! THe pointy ones don't look like anything edible.

THe one bottom left does look a bit like some salad leaves, so maybe mixed up at the packing plant.

Take it back to the shop. I'll have a closer look at what I'm eating next time!

giletrouge · 08/06/2021 10:42

Yes to the analysis above and the yellow ones look like rosemary gone yellow. It's all edible.
I do tend to check it over also because often some of it has gone rotten while most is fine.

AlmostSummer21 · 08/06/2021 10:44

Yep. If it's in a bag sold as salad leaves it gets eaten!

RoseWineandCake · 08/06/2021 10:46

I frequently have those yellowy leaves mixed in with my bag of spinach leaves. I never eat them as I have no idea what they are.

PuffinPeter · 08/06/2021 10:47

The yellow ones are not rosemary. Could be an allium (onion, edible) leaf, of a bit of leaf from some sort of bulb (not edible). Sometimes you find the odd other leaf mixed in but that does appear excessive and I would complain.

LostInTime · 08/06/2021 10:49

If it was labelled and sold as 'Spinach' I'd take it back, as there's clearly other things in there. What if someone had an allergy to rocket, or whatever?

habibihabibi · 08/06/2021 10:49

I had a large garden snail in a bag from Sainsburys once. Discovered it thankfully before serving at a dinner party Grin

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 08/06/2021 10:54

The yellow leaves are the cotyledons of the spinach plants.

The other 2, as said above, are watercress and rocket.

1n5piration · 08/06/2021 10:55

The snail we found in our last bag of salad now has a name and a tank and is about 400 times larger than when he arrived Grin
I’m 99.9% certain the yellow ones aren’t Rosemary. Wrong texture and don’t smell of it.

isthismylifenow · 08/06/2021 10:56

To me that looks like baby spinach, the stems of the spinach, rocket and watercress. All edible. But yes, more than just spinach.

twointhemorning · 08/06/2021 11:01

Our guinea pigs won't eat the funny looking leaves either Grin
So I definitely wouldn't...

Seeline · 08/06/2021 11:06

THe small leaves on stalks wre not watercress - they are pointy, and watercress is round. I'm not convinced by pea shoots either...

That doesn't all look like spinach. The light bits look like the ends of other salad leaves and the small ones look like pea shoots. I think if you can return it you should - as others have said, if people have allergies then this batch needs to be recalled to prevent health issues.
Notsogreenthumb · 08/06/2021 13:40

The yellow ones I would touch, the rest seem like what others have said, spinach, water cress and rockets

Don't worry OP I'm with you on this, many things are labelled and sold as food but I'm sure the ladybird crush in my teapigs bag wasn't part of the recipe Envy, I only noticed it mid drink and then we cut open the bag and lo and behold a dead lady bird excuse me while I go vomit

Notsogreenthumb · 08/06/2021 13:40

Wouldn't*^

TheWindOnTheMoon · 08/06/2021 13:55

I would assume everything's edible from the supermarket but obvs pick out anything that looks like it's going bad.

That said, our veg box provider had a reminder on their website a while back to remember to wash and pick over the wild garlic if you'd ordered any and remove any leaves that didn't look the same. So I suppose it can happen that a rogue leaf can get past the packing stage Shock
