Brain fog and lethargy for 3 days after drinking

HI all
I used to drink a fair bit until I was about 45 (5 years ago)...then I found I couldnt drink on two consecutive nights without suffering for days afterwards - more mentally - brain fog, lethargy, irritable, inability to concentrate etc. So I would plan socially to do something one night at the weekend and the other night I would drive so I wouldnt drink.

Over lockdown I have drunk very little ...but now I find that even a couple of glasses of wine on one evening results in a 3 or 4 day zombie like state. Its miserable not to be able to relax and have a glass of wine. I am still suffering this morning (Tues) from sharing a bottle of expensive wine over dinner on Sat :( Trying to get to the bottom of this. And find out what elements of the alcohol are impacting this and can I prevent? And has anyone tried the 'CleanWine' product?

I'm not too sure but I never drank much anyway but always enjoyed a glass of wine. Since I entered my 40s, it's been nearly impossible.

Even a single glass of wine, with food, cab leave me feeling wretched, groggy & not functioning the next day. I feel very aggrieved - it was a small pleasure but I've completely stopped now. Not worth it.

To add, I am having perimenopausal symptoms now including awful sleep quality so wouldn't even consider it.

Yes...I think that's what I need to do.Miserable isnt it?

I do not drink at all for precisely this reason. I seem to lack the equipment to metabolise alcohol and even the tiniest amount makes me feel grim for days.

You may simply have to join the ranks of teetotallers. I do not miss it, and I am sure that you won't after a while.

Yes, I agree with pp, you may as well join the teetotallers.
There is a great thread on here about alcohol free drinks. Great alternatives.

Same here, but I did find I was able to tolerate the odd cider once my hrt had kicked in.

If I drink LOTS of water I can just about tolerate a glass in the evening, but even with HRT it really does sap my energy levels!

I’m in your age bracket OP and all of my female (if I can use that term) friends are now losing their ability to process alcohol. One friend cannot handle champagne, another spirits and I can’t really deal with wine any more. I’m better with a g and t but would always stop at two absolute max. I concluded unscientifically albeit that it must be somehow linked to dropping hormones. But some of us are on HRT and that doesn’t even help. Maybe it’s just the aging body/liver? But I don’t see men going off alcohol at the same rate.

This was me last August. I knocked it on the head and my life is immeasurably better. I seem to have twice as many hours in the day, have lost two stone and can now run 11k without stopping.

Quite hard work at the beginning, but massively worth it.

I can't tolerate wine any more but gin and tonic is fine.
